into two separate competition squads. One is the varsity squad made up of the team veterans and the other is the prep squad, composed of the new members. “We are very balanced,” Foster said, regarding the strength of this season’s Wildcats. “Last year our backs were the strength of our team. Foster noted some other interesting results are already developing for the Wildcats after their first matches of the season, both regulation and exhibition. A provincial rankings notice has come in his email with a request for information on RDHS already. “Rockland will probably be in the top 10,” he said, adding that kind of early- ranking is a first for the Wildcats varsity girls. The Wildcats varsity girls is putting Rockland District High School’s name on report in the high school rugby world. And that’s a good thing. After clipping the claws on Ottawa’s Ashbury in exhibition play, the RDHS Wildcats shut down more of the Ottawa competition in their first three regular season matches on their home turf during the April 19 tournament in Rockland. They demolished Sir Wilfred Laurier High 50-0, Ridgemont Secondary 25-0, and Canterbury 30-0. “Sure, it’s early in the season, but we’re lookingprettygood,”saidCoachBillFoster, smiling. “The new players are doing really well. "A good way to start the season," said Coach Andrew Lawford. "You get to see some of the better teams in the province." In regular season play, the Wildcats senior boys hosted their first tournament April 17 and chewed up Ridgemont High 12-5, St. Pius 12-5, and Gloucester 32-0. Lawford noted offence is the team's strong suit. "Big forward pack," he said. "We like to crash the ball up the middle and lot, and it's usually successful."
