We’re so blessed to have family who can travel. I have one sister in Colorado and another in Minnesota, and both will make the trek to our home here in Huntley. I want to make it worth their time, so I’ve made some plans. First, we’re going to the Turkey Testicle Festival. It’ll be our first time. They (the testicles) look just like popcorn chicken in the pictures. If you’ve tried them, you should tell us what we’re in for. I love the idea of sending my sisters back to Minnesota and Colorado to tell everyone they tried an authentic Huntley, Illinois, turkey testicle. When we’re together, my sisters and I love to bake. It’s a tradition for us to try new recipes. But I’m not messing with the turkey. I’ll do all the baking, but I’ll leave the bird to someone who can cook it without a hitch. We might actually deep-fry it anyway, being careful to not burn the house down. We just love being together. Our kids do, too. For Mike and I, holidays are all about family. One of the things we’re most grateful for this Thanksgiving season is having a family that is so close-knit, even though we live far apart. You don’t always see families getting along this well at special occasions. But we do our best because we make each other a priority, and if we can pass that along to our kids, well, we’d love that. On the subject of gratitude, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say how grateful we are for our loyal patients. You give us purpose every day. Our friends at Del Webb, especially, are just so good to us. We’re grateful we’ve found a community to serve, grow with, and call our home.

If you’ve ever raised teenage daughters, you know how long they can tie up the bathroom. They take long showers and spend forever in front of the mirror, primping and dolling themselves up. When my three sisters were growing up, we had one tiny bathroom to share. It was a bit of a challenge, but we made it work. Privacy was hard to come by. We shared rooms for most of my life. Luckily, that prepared us for the holidays. This year, it’s my turn to host my sisters and their families for Thanksgiving. It’ll be a lot of air mattresses and waiting for the bathroom, but it’s no problem for my sisters and me. It’s how we’ve always operated anyway. Regardless of close quarters, I couldn’t be more excited to spend the holiday with my family. If you’re married, you probably know about the switch- off method for holidays. Maybe you even practice it. Thanksgiving with one side, Christmas with the other, and switch it up the next year. My family does it, and it works beautifully. We’ll spend Thanksgiving with my family and Christmas with Mike’s. Next year, we’ll switch.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Life-Giving Benefits of Saunas

Sweat the Years Away

Colder weather is hard on our bodies for many reasons. The air dries and cracks our skin, freezing temperatures cause old injuries to flare up and joints to ache, and the conditions just make it plain hard to exercise. What’s a fair-weather bird to do? Head to the sauna! If you haven’t already adopted the regimen, you are missing out. Sauna use has been popular in Finland for thousands of years, and there are compelling reasons why. Not only are there many bodily benefits, but science is telling us it may also protect the mind. We’ve known for a long time that saunas can help with blood circulation, stress relief, and cardiovascular health. Traditional saunas use heat to get your blood flowing and promote circulation, and the sweating that goes on during a sauna experience is said to release toxins from your body. It’s a rejuvenating ritual that releases stress along with endorphins. Now, the health journal Age and Ageing has found evidence linking sauna use to a lowered risk for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Men aged 42–60 who participated in frequent sauna bathing sessions were found to have lowered rates of dementia and

Alzheimer’s. If feeling good and warming you up weren’t enough, a healthy mind is a great reason to sauna. And while the simplicity of the traditional sauna is part of what makes it great, some facilities have added a modern twist: infrared rays. Infrared saunas are already hot in New York City and Los Angeles and are starting to pop up everywhere else. Especially if you have trouble dealing with the heat of a typical sauna (average sauna temperatures are kept around 212 degrees Fahrenheit), this latest trend is for you. The average temperature for an infrared sauna is 150 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a more tolerable experience. One New York studio boasts of infrared’s ability to stimulate collagen production, an added anti-aging benefit. Need another bonus? Infrared saunas are said to release up to 20 percent more toxins from the body than traditional saunas. Whichever type of sauna you decide to visit, the potential health benefits speak for themselves. If you don’t get to escape to Miami or Cancun this winter (and even if you do), it’s a relaxing way to warm up and ease winter ailments. Treat your body and yourself to a sauna experience!

It’s that time of year to be thinking about the holidays and Christmas shopping. We feel very fortunate to participate as a drop off location for Toys for Tots again this year. Please consider helping children in our community by donating an unwrapped new toy by December 10th

“Amanda has been my miracle worker. After my ankle replacement surgery, all activities using my ankle were difficult and painful. With Amanda’s sweet nagging and therapy, I am now able to walk without limping, climb stairs, and even play golf. Three months of hard work have paid off.”

Your back is what holds you up. It dictates every twist and turn of your body. It’s also home to the spine, which is a tricky part of your nerve center. When your back hurts,

The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recently published findings that prove physical therapy is the best initial treatment for symptomatic lumbar degenerative disc disease, one of the most common causes of back pain. Combined with anti- inflammatory medications, this will nip most consistent back pain in the bud. More severe conditions, such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and osteoarthritis are more on the serious side. Those will usually require more in-depth therapy, but our specialists here at Kinetic will use gentle, hands-on treatment to stabilize the muscles in the lower back and improve flexibility and range of motion. Our lower back pain program here at Kinetic Physical Therapy Specialists has been specially developed to reduce and remove back pain. The program will also teach you good posture and exercises you can do on your own, so improving your back becomes a daily process.

everything hurts — it can make it painful to lie down, stand up, sit in a chair, and everything in between.

Lower back pain is most rampant because it can stem from things as common as bad posture, obesity, and lifting heavy objects. Not exercising or spending too much time sitting at your computer are also key contributors. But if we know the causes, what’s the cure?

Thanksgiving is a holiday full of traditions, from turkey and stuffing to football and naps. Since 1924, the Macy’s Parade has grown to become not only a Thanksgiving staple but also the world’s largest parade. Over 3.5 million people attended the parade last year, with another 20 million tuning in from home. The main attraction is always the massive character balloons, which first graced the skies in 1927. Over the decades, some of these balloons have become nearly as famous as the character they depict. Felix the Cat When the Felix the Cat balloon appeared in 1931, it set the standard for all characters to follow. Sadly, the original balloon got tangled in wires and caught on fire, so it has been lost to history. Felix’s influence on the parade is so immense, however, that when Macy’s brought him back in 2016 for the parade’s 90th anniversary, they recreated his original design. Without Felix’s influence, the parade might look a lot different today. Snoopy When it comes to balloon characters, none is more famous than the classic “Peanuts” beagle. His first balloon floated through the sky in 1968, and he’s been a regular fixture ever since. Charles Schultz’s famous pooch holds the record for most variations in a parade

(eight) and most total appearances (40). Though Snoopy doesn’t come out every year, he usually closes the show when he does. Pikachu The Pokémon mascot didn’t appear until 2001, but he’s become a star attraction, showing up every year since. Bright, expressive, and impossible to miss, Pikachu checks off all the boxes for a successful balloon character. For 16 years, those who predicted that Pokémon was just a fad have gotten a big, yellow reminder of just how wrong they were.
