Three charged for impaired driving Within the last three weeks, Russell County OPP conducted 40 R.I.D.E checks and arrested and charged three men and one woman in relation to impaired driving: Yannick Labelle, aged 26, of Ottawa, Shane Haggstrom, aged 53, of Clarence, James Louis Farren, aged 53, of Russell, and Mikeala Melkert, aged 20, of North Stormont. They are scheduled to attend Provincial Court of Justice in L’Orignal, Ontario for their first appearance in Janu- ary 2018. Drivers charged with excess blood alcohol are subject to an automatic 90-day driver’s license suspension and their vehicles are impounded for seven days. All three drivers lost their driving privileges for three days because of a reading of more than 50mg of alcohol at roadside.
New winter safety measures, but still no mandatory winter tires The province of Ontario is implementing new measures to help keep drivers safe in the winter, but Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca still stands with the fact that the province has no plans to make winter tires mandatory anytime soon. These new measures include raising more awareness for drivers and motorcyclists about winter weather conditions, installing additional weather signs and more intensive blitzes. Several new weather-warning signs have been installed between Kingston and Cobourg, Ont., which, Del Duca said, have been successful in other parts of the province where they have already been set up.. After two collisions in one day near Prescott, Ont., that killed two people and resulted in numerous injuries just two weeks ago, the mayor of the town called on the province to make the highway safer. Making Highway 401 safer is part of a more long-term plan. – Alexia Marsillo
