Taking action now against mental illness

In honor of the Mental Health Awareness Week (MIAW), fromOctober 4 to October 10, more than 75 people took part in the 11 th annual Mental Illness AwarenessWalk, on October 6. “Mental illness a!ects more than sixmil- lion people across the country, or one in "ve Canadians,” explained Angele D’Alessio, mental health promoter at the Canadian Mental Health Association. “Unfortunately, many Canadians withmental illness will not seek the help they need and society conti- nues to remain unaware of the signi"cant burden mental illness places on us all.” #e walk started at the Army, Navy and Air Force building, on Malborough Street and invaded much of Montreal Road and Le Village area. Following the walk, Cor- nwall resident Stephen Shea received the 2015 Hope and Resiliency award, following his battle with anxiety and depression. “I hadn’t worked in 20 years,” he explained. “But I received a lot of help and I realised that anything is possible.” Shea is now a successful driver and su!ers
from nearly no or very little social anxiety. Local MP Guy Lauzon was present at the event and explained that he thinks mental illness will one day disappear. “Mental health is very important to me,” he said. “As I get older, I realise that mental illness is a very
serious topic and it a!ects a lot more people than we think.” #is year’s MIAW theme is Take Action Now . “We hope to reach more Canadians than ever before,” explained D’Alessio.
