Thinking Matters

Boys love the challenges offered in this subject. Competitions form a significant part of the diet offered to boys, and every year between 150 and 200 boys take part in each of the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematical Challenges, with a high number of boys qualifying for the follow-on rounds.

In February, a team of four boys (from Years 7, 8 and two from Year 9) entered the UKMT challenge, coming fourth out of 36 nationally, and a further team of four boys won the Plate competition in the Hans Woyda inter-school competition. We also run our own Christmaths Lower School competition in December. ‘I have really enjoyed taking part in the British Mathematical Olympiad and I’m pleased with my success in it. I enjoy knowing that I am competing against some of the best Mathematics students in the country. Getting through to the final round of the Balkan Mathematics Olympiad last year gave me the chance to compete against other students from around the world. I have learned a lot of different aspects of Mathematics through the Olympiad, particularly the geometry questions as these go far beyond the current school syllabus.’ Frank Han, Year 13

The Mathematics Society covers a range of events, which last year have included a series of talks on Financial Maths by Rubel Molla (OA), attended by Years 12 and 13, Sir Bryan Thwaites presenting the Thwaites conjecture, and pupil Maths talks – all Sixth Form boys applying for Mathematics at University delivered a lunchtime talk during the Michaelmas term.

Simon Adugna, in Year 7, recites π to 229 decimal places in February on the annual ‘Pi’ day, a record for the Lower School.
