Thinking Matters

The Hans Woyda team, winners of the inter-schools Plate competition.

‘Hans Woyda teaches me to keep calm under high pressure, solving maths problems in split seconds. Also, I really enjoy the teamwork and participation against other schools.’ Andy Zhang, Year 11 ‘The IMC is a fun competition in which you are given stretching questions to answer under time pressure. However, the real fun comes if you qualify for the intermediate Maths Olympiad. In this paper, you are given plenty of time and only six questions, which are very challenging. It provides a great level of satisfaction when you figure out the answer to these problems, and devise full mathematical solutions.’ Kit George, Year 10

‘I have greatly enjoyed writing a new article each year for the DC Mathematica magazine, as it has encouraged me to research new fields of Maths every time or explore further a seemingly simple topic. This is, though time-consuming, often very rewarding and I have acquired new mathematical skills every time.’ Ayman D’Souza, Year 9

‘It was very satisfying to see what was initially just an idea grow into something with genuine mathematical grounding, and to be able to see this accepted as a piece of original work. When editing, the experience of having to learn and grapple with MS Word for mathematical notation was useful for my Extended Essay over the summer. Both my articles also became great discussion material for my UCAS Personal Statement, as evidence of wider interest and enthusiasm in preparation for undergraduate Mathematics.’ Francis Aznaran, Year 13
