Upravo to se dogodilo 1959. go- dine kada su otkrivene pećine Ner- he. NERJA And while we’re mentioning water, here we are arrive in the Costa del Sol, the Coast of the Sun, and the most beautiful beaches in southern Spain, and indeed anywhere in Europe. The once sleepy fishing village of Nerja, lo- cated approximately 50 kilometres from Málaga, has gradually developed into a resort filled with typical Span- ish houses, shops and authentic res- taurants surrounded by mountains, sand beaches and coves carved into cliffs. The town has resisted high-rise residential blocks, remaining a charm- ing seaside settlement that’s often
dubbed the jewel of the Costa del Sol. One of the most outstanding attrac- tions in the city is the Balcón de Europa (Balcony of Europe), a beautiful prom- enade that stretches along the edge of a high cliff that was once topped by a Moorish castle. The platform offers spectacular panoramic views over the Mediterranean, and on particularly clear days you can even see the coast of Africa. The Andalusian culture, perfect cli- matic conditions and cosmopolitan at- mosphere have made Nerja one of the most attractive summer break desti- nations, but there’s another great rea- son to come here. Imagine being out one evening with friends on the look- out for bats when you come across abandoned caves that extend under- ground for many metres. This is exact- ly what happened in 1959, when the Nerja caves were discovered. From chamber after chamber, under mys- tical lighting, you will encounter mag- nificent rock formations, but also the largest stalagmite in the world, a natu- ral column reaching a height of 32 me- tres. And don’t forget that these caves host a flamenco music and dance fes- tival every July, and attending it is an unforgettable experience.
