Asked and Answered One collector asked how technology has changed the production process from what it was in the beginning to what it is today. In the very beginning, the art had to be mailed overseas where a master sculptor would sculpt each piece. Every change would require phone calls, packages going across the ocean, and later, faxed images of line art and directions. Now we have artists and product developers who can sit at a desk and draw on what looks like a computer screen. Everything is digital, so changes are simple, sending images overseas happens in nanoseconds, and groups of creative minds from around the globe can get together at the same time to brainstorm any issues that arise. As far as the actual sculpting goes, I have been working with Master Sculptor Hiko Maeda for about nine years now and I am constantly amazed at his talent. But with all artists, sometimes you need to see things through more than just your own eyes to make it the best that it can be. On sculpting days, Hiko, Jeremy Wyman (our Product Development Manager), and I are in the sculpting room together. Now that I have moved to Carthage, I have to be in the sculpting room on a video call, but we do the best we can. The three of us make a wonderful team. Technology has made this type of teamwork possible, but it is not perfect. Video distorts perspective, so without being able to fully trust the talent and opinions of Hiko and Jeremy, this type of arrangement would never work. So, the simple answer is that technology has dramatically reduced time and cost, but it is still up to the talent of the human beings behind the tech that determines good product.

I have loved animals since as far back as I can remember. Tippy the dog, depicted in so many pieces of my dad’s art, was a little dog that I “rescued” when I was 11.
