Bright Skies Ahead

LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT 2022

As we enter 2022, many of us are relieved to leave the previous year behind. But despite the challenges, I’m pleased with how 2021 turned out. I’ve grown a lot during that time, both personally and professionally. Toward the end of last year, my family celebrated our first holiday season with our oldest daughter home from college. Many parents will recognize the resulting joys and challenges. While my daughter was at school, our other two kids got used to having more space in the house and fell into their own routines. Once everyone was together again, it was interesting to watch the old family dynamics reestablish themselves. But it was an excellent time to reconnect — in a way, it made the holiday season even more special. The fact that we’re not together all of the time helped us cherish the visit that much more. As we dropped our daughter back off at school, we were sad to see her leave the house again but happy to see her continue to grow. And we’re also excited to see our younger daughters develop their own identities as they get older. One of the things I’m looking forward to in 2022 is testing for my black belt in taekwondo this February with my middle daughter. My youngest daughter has her third-degree black belt, but she can’t earn her fourth-degree belt until she turns 18. My middle daughter and I keep joking that we’ll catch up to her, but honestly, I don’t think she has much to worry about. After securing my black belt, I plan to continue training for my second degree. As long as one of my daughters wants to continue the sport, I’m up for it. It’s a fun activity to do together and helps keep us close — as long as they don’t hit me too hard! I’m also hoping to travel more. Planning our family vacation is yet another reminder that the kids aren’t little anymore; they’re past the point of thinking the best trip ever consists of an amusement park.

With their tastes maturing, we’re trying to figure out how the next phase of our family vacations will look. We’re also hoping to visit my brother, whose 50th birthday celebration was delayed last year. We intend to travel as an office, too. In June, we’re attending an annual dental conference in Las Vegas. It will be a refreshing return to normalcy. It will also help us reset our goals as we move out of the crisis phase of COVID-19 and plan for what our practice will look like over the next 10 to 15 years. As the years pass by, I’ve got to find ways to work smarter and sustain the business in the long term. We’re working to hire additional staff and provide additional training to our current team so they can grow into new roles. I’m also excited to focus on our growing Invisalign and sleep dentistry services. Meanwhile, Dr. Andrea Londono-Shishehbor hopes to bring more facial aesthetics services to Exceptional Smiles. We want to continue growing the business and ensure we can keep caring for our patients, who we consider a type of family. We also want to ensure the business is sustainable so we can continue enjoying our free time and the company of our families. Our goal is to foster relationships with the patients we see throughout the year, the staff we work with every day, and our loved ones at home. I think the world is in a much better place than it was a year ago, and if we have any regrets about 2020 and 2021, we should remember that we wouldn’t be where we are today without living through them. I’m excited for the brighter skies and greener pastures of 2022, and I can’t wait to see all of the blessings it brings to our dental community. I hope to see everyone’s lovely, non-masked smiles soon. -Dr. Jason Schermer

AND A NEW COMMITMENT TO DENTAL HEALTH New Year, New Benefits

During the holidays, we tend to forget about good habits and overindulge. We overeat, drink a little too much, and exercise less frequently. Many people start to neglect their dental health, too. They’re busy at the end of the year, and they often can’t find time to fit a dental appointment into their already full holiday schedule. If you slacked off a bit toward the end of last year, we understand! But your oral health shouldn’t wait any longer than it already has. At the beginning of a new year, many people make resolutions to improve their health, relationships, and lives. Make brushing up on your dental care one of your goals this year. The good news is that most dental insurance plans renew in January, so you have a fresh set of benefits lined up. If you reached your maximum benefit last year and have been putting off care, now is the perfect time to seek treatment — before the problem worsens. The longer you wait, the more uncomfortable you’ll be, and the more your care is likely to cost.

Further, most plans offer free preventive care, including cleanings, X-rays, and oral exams. If you don’t use those benefits, they don’t carry over to the following year, so you should use them while you can, especially if it has been a while since your last visit. Scheduling your appointment early in the year helps ensure that you don’t run out of time to do so as the year gets increasingly hectic. Plus, catching issues sooner allows you to prevent your treatment from being stretched across two different plan years. Doing as much work as possible within one year helps maximize your benefits and reduce your out-of-pocket costs. The Exceptional Smiles team is here to ensure you make the most out of your benefits in 2022. If you have questions about what your dental benefits cover, or if you need to schedule an appointment, we’d be glad to help. Make a renewed commitment to your oral health by giving us a call today!

A WHOLE NEW YOU TRANSFORM YOUR SMILE WITH A SAME-DAY CROWN

If you’re looking for a new year’s transformation, an update to your smile is one of the most significant changes you can make. Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, and its appearance can make or break your confidence. At Exceptional Smiles, we’re now offering same-day crowns. Using Glidewell and E4D crowns and technology, your new crown can be completed by our team in-house without the hassle of repeat visits or the discomfort of temporaries. Dentists use crowns to repair teeth that have been damaged by cavities or trauma. When the root is intact, removal is unnecessary, but the

In the past, if your tooth was damaged and needed repair with a crown, the dentist would make a messy, manual impression, which most patients find unpleasant. Then, they would ship that impression off to a lab to construct a crown that perfectly matched your teeth. In the meantime, you would receive a temporary crown to avoid further damage to the tooth — but its non- customized fit would require specialized care and a modified diet, plus pose a risk of coming loose. With new technology from Glidewell and E4D, all of that has changed. Using 3D computer processes, one of our dentists can now make a digital model of your teeth and create the perfect crown in-office. The dentist can then try the crown in your mouth to evaluate its appearance and fit and make minor adjustments. Once everything is perfectly in place, the dentist will bond the crown to your tooth, and you’ll leave the office looking good as new. If you’re ready for your brightest smile ever in 2022, give our office a call today. Our doctors are cosmetic dentistry experts and have given countless patients the smiles of their dreams. We offer free consultations and would love the opportunity to show you what we can achieve with same-day dentistry.

damaged tooth is fragile and needs to be rebuilt. Crowns go on top of the tooth to protect and hide the damage underneath. When the crown is expertly placed, it looks exactly like a real tooth.

4 Steps to Setting Better Goals With Your Children

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO SET GOALS

4 STEPS TO SUCCESS

This new year, teach your children how to set healthy, achievable goals.

Start by sharing your goals. Without even realizing it, children often mimic the actions of the adults around them. So, share your goals with your child, and explain how you plan to achieve these goals. Then ask your child to do the same. It can be as big as moving up three grade levels in reading or as small as beating a video game. Foster these ideas within your child so they will set one of their goals and have a positive experience when they achieve it. Create next steps together. If you want to have more energy in the new year, what steps will you take to achieve that goal? Ask your child to consider the same question in regard to their objectives. If their goal is to finish a certain video game, how will they improve their current game play? What can they do to earn more video game time? Are there learning tools that can help them accomplish this? Teach them that achieving a goal is about so much more than desire; you have to put in the work to accomplish it, too!

something. For example, start and complete an arts and crafts project or game together to show your little one the value of finishing what they start. Then, slowly work your way up to the big goal. Maybe that’s cleaning their room without unnecessary detours or finishing their homework on time. Finally, celebrate! This is important. Acknowledge the wins that both you and your child have throughout the year. For example, if they want to be a better reader, celebrate whenever they finish a book. This will encourage them to keep going. And even if they do fail, honor their effort. Remind them that putting in the effort, regardless of the outcome, is powerful, too.

Focus on keeping it small. If you want to encourage your child to achieve their goals, then create smaller tasks that teach them the value of finishing
