Christ suggested that He wanted us each and all to build a tower for His glory. Great men of God have done so. Their words and their sayings have been a blessing to posterity. Each of us should seek to follow in their steps. Kindness is Remembered Mr. C. J. Baker, the noted tentmaker of Kansas City, often said: “ If you err, let it be on the side of grace.” That attitude characterized his life. It was his great joy to go the second mile, to for give his enemies, and to help those whose worst enemy was themselves. If the drunkard stated that he was hungry, the gift was given to him because Mr. Baker said, “He might be hungry.” If an injustice was done against him, Mr. Baker would accept the excuse and say, “ Perhaps he was telling the truth.” There is no law against being gracious, kind, and forgiving. The statement Mr. Baker made should be memorized. Willing to be Led Mr. Sywulka, a missionary to German East Africa, once said, “You must be willing to be defeated.” This statement was not understood by me, but he ex emplified it in his own life and left that blessed influence on the lives and in the hearts of many. His thought was that it is necessary always to be just as willing to quit a particular work as it is to begin a work. There are times when the enterprise should be quit and the Christian’s endeavor transferred to an other field. This principle has blessed many. We Are Not Indispensable The writer of the book of Judges wrote, “After him . . . Shamgar.” Rich ard Hill has emphasized this short pas sage in his life and ministry. The thought of the passage is that God always has another worker who is able and willing to step into the shoes of a predecessor when God calls this one aside. None of us are indispensable to God’s work. There are others who can do our task and perhaps do it even better. God’s work depends upon God, not upon us.- “ Let Us Lay Aside Every Weight” This admonition by the Apostle Paul has revolutionized the lives of many Christians. In most lives there are those things that hinder running the race well. These may not be sins, they may not be offenses. They may be just too much business or an attitude of worldliness or a restless mind which is not satisfied. There are many things that are weights about the neck of the Christian which should not be there. Let our lives be blessed by Paul’s vision. We should thank God for good wives. God said concerning Adam, “ I will make an help meet for him.” The Lord knows what kind of wife will meet the need of each man. This wife is to be a helper, not a hindrance. She is to be the right kind, not the wrong kind. Most great men of God have had wonderful wives. Most of them ascribe their success in large measure to the sweetheart God has given them. Marriage should always be arranged in God’s presence. The Husband and Wife Are Heirs God has intended that the husband and the wife should be a blessing and a help to each other. Each one has gifts to be used for the glory of God. “ The grace of life” is to be enjoyed by both and the blessing of God is to be received by both. John Williams and his young sweetheart went to the South Sea Islands together. They shared the privations and the sor rows of death in the family together. She encouraged him as Ann encouraged her husband. This is the ideal arrange ment in God’s service. Solomon Said, “He That Findeth a Wife Findeth a Good Thing” Prov. 18:22 The wife should bring joy and glad ness to the husband’s heart. Of course, the husband should deserve it. It is not very often that family troubles are one sided. Marriage is a business partner ship as well as a love affair. The hus band and wife should share alike in their problems, their programs, and their pro visions. There should be a mutual under standing of each other’s needs so that there may be happy cooperation in every enterprise. For this reason God com mands marriage only between saved peo ple. An unsaved partner can never enter into the thoughts of the Christian. “A Prudent Wife is of the Lord” Prov. 19:14 Quite often following the wife’s coun sel prevents difficulties, sorrows, and troubles. She may see angles to the proposition that are not observed by the husband. She will often act in a restrain ing manner to prevent the impulsive de sires and programs of the husband. She will encourage him when his heart is heavy and will increase his faith as the Word of God is read together at the fam ily altar. She will bring blessing to his heart when others are crushing him. The home will be a haven of rest and refuge at her side when turmoil and trouble abound outside. The Husband Should Love His Wife as Himself Eph. 5:33 In order to have a perfect union of minds and hearts there must be a loving Together 1 Pet. 3:7
