Year In Review, Part II: More Production Equals More Profits BY LEN PRAZYCH The second half of 2022 began where the first half of the year left off: with news of significant capital investments by independents in new machinery to expand capacity, increase production and generate prof- its. In other words, it’s business as usual for corrugated and folding carton converters.

Ox Industries Closes Oldest Operating Mill In WV The Halltown Mill in Halltown, West Virginia, hailed as the oldest continuously operating manufacturing plant in West Virginia, closed in November 2022. According to local media reports, Jeffer- son County Development Authority Executive Director Dennis Jarvis confirmed the loss of approximately 70 jobs and indicated the own- ers potential reuse of the facility. The Halltown Mill started in 1869 as a pa- per mill until it became an operational paper board mill. In 2007, it was purchased by Ha- nover, Pennsylvania based Ox Industries, one of the largest independently owned, vertically integrated producers of paperboard, special- ty paper, tube & core, and protective packag- ing products. The Halltown Mill once recycled 1.8 million gallons of water per day, had converted from coal-powered to natural gas, produced 120 tons of paperboard per day and employed more than 70 people. It had been producing recycled paper- board since World War II and in its 153-year history had only four groups of owners. Pic- tures of the original Eyster family, Joseph Alli-

The facility will house next generation equipment and manufacturing practices and expand Just-in-Time (JIT) stocking products and services. CEO Kevin Hayward said that it was part of a $15 million investment that would vertically integrate with the company’s 100 percent recycled paperboard mills and create 50 new green-collar jobs. Ox Industries was founded in 1996 as Ox Paper Tube & Core with just a handful of employees. The company has grown to over 500 employees with multiple mills and converting facilities across the country.

Diamond Packaging Given Platinum Rating In EcoVadis Assessment Rochester, New York based Diamond Packaging an- nounced it has been awarded a Platinum rating for the second year in a row by EcoVadis, the leading global ad- vocate for sustainability and corporate social responsibil- ity (CSR). The award is the highest recognition given by EcoVadis and places Diamond in the top one percent of all companies evaluated worldwide. “We’re honored with this recognition, as it affirms our commitment to integrating the principles of sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) into our busi- ness,” said Dennis Bacchetta, Director of Marketing and founding member of Diamond’s Green Team. “We will con- tinue working with our supply chain partners to research, design, and implement packaging solutions that are inno- vative and more sustainable.” EcoVadis operates the first collaborative platform pro- viding Supplier Sustainability Ratings for global supply chains. EcoVadis was founded with the belief that global businesses can make a huge positive impact on improving environmental and social practices globally, through their supply chains. The EcoVadis rating methodology covers 21 criteria across four themes of Environment, Labor & Hu- man Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. They are based on international sustainability standards, includ-

ing the Global Compact Principles, the International La- bour Organization (ILO) conventions, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard, the ISO 26000 standard, and the CERES principles. EcoVadis also evaluates seven manage- ment indicators, including Policies, Actions, and Results. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the continuing commitment by businesses to act responsibly by integrat- ing social and environmental concerns into their opera- tions. CSR goes beyond regulatory compliance to focus on how companies manage their economic, social, and environmental impacts, as well as their relationships with stakeholders (e.g., employees, suppliers, government). Diamond ranked in the top two percent of suppliers assessed by EcoVadis in the category “Manufacture of corrugated paper and paperboard and of containers of paper and paperboard.” Diamond ranked highest in the Environment category, which comprises both operational factors and product stewardship (Diamond also received an Advanced rating on EcoVadis’ new Carbon Scorecard. The company was recognized for its comprehensive GHG management system, and reporting in line with global standards, including third party data verification. Today, Diamond’s packaging is designed utilizing recy- clable or recycled paperboards (many FSC-certified), and manufactured using 100 percent clean, renewable wind energy, in a Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) and Carbon Neu- tral (Scope 1 and Scope 2) facility. Sustainability, Circularity Are Critical Factors To The Success Of Packaging Manufacturers BY SUSAN RILEY Sustainability will continue to be the buzz word in manufacturing for the foreseeable future, with many packaging manufacturers touting their aims to support a circular industrial economy in this age of the internet and renewable energy. The results of the National Association of Manu- facturers’ (NAM) Sustainability and the Circular Econ- omy research survey indicates that manufacturers increasingly view sustainability as a critical factor in their future success. Sixty-eight percent of exec- utives polled say they are implementing extensive, corporate-wide sustainability strategies, which is nearly double the 39 percent who indicated so in 2019, according to NAM. Why is this? According to the survey, company execs believe sustain- able practices align with their corporate values, contribute to a healthier environment, and quite simply, improves their reputation with customers and investors. Priorities towards this goal include energy efficiency and net-zero emission targets, and 4.0 technologies including analytics, PLM software, and IoT sensor data. In 2022, companies expressing their vision for a circular economy was a common theme in Board Converting News : • In November, Cascades announced that all its consumer product packaging would be evaluated by How2Recycle for their recycling potential. How2Recycle is a standardized package labeling system launched by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition that communicates recycling instructions to the public. Cascades aims to make all its packaging recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2030. • In March, Green Bay Packaging announced that its mill achieved net-zero water in its production of 100 percent recycled container- board paper, the first-ever UL with validation of this environmental claim. This was accomplished using reclaimed water and alternative water sources instead of freshwater. • Graphic Packaging International introduced its “KeelClip” this year, which eliminates plastic rings and shrink wrap on Coca-Cola multi- packs. • Greif secured a $2.4 million financing package tied to its sustainability performance and commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its products and operations. • Packaging experts at sustainability leader DS Smith envision a “self-healing” box that could be reused again and again in their blue- print for the future. Paperboard packaging, a renewable resource contributing to a circu- lar economy, is also reflected in recycling rates that are increasing steadi- ly year by year in the U.S. and Canada. In the U.S., the Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) recycling rate has increased from 54 percent in 1993 to the current rate of 91.4 percent, according to the American Forest & Pa- per Association (AF&PA). And recycling content of Canadian shipments of containerboard, boxboard and kraft paper was 81.7 percent in 2020, up from 73.5 percent in 2018, according to a survey released this year by the Paper and Paperboard Packaging Environmental Council (PPEC). Sustainability and circularity are buzz words that are here to stay. Susan Riley is the Associate Editor at Board Converting News. Reach her at sriley@nvpublications.com. Susan Riley

DS Smith Survey: Consumers Support Recycling, But Bins Are Overflowing Consumers busy with online holiday shopping said they are committed to recycling packages but admit they re- sort to bad habits sometimes when their at-home recycling bins are full, according to a national survey by DS Smith, a provider of sustainable corrugated packaging. Nearly 70 percent of respondents said their recycling bins are mostly full, full or overflowing by the time collec- tion day comes around. When their cans are fully loaded before being picked up, 20 percent said they throw extra recyclable material into the regular trash, meaning it need- lessly could end up in a landfill. A few – four out of 10 – even stash it in a neighbor’s bin. The findings underscore the pressure on consumers, local governments responsible for trash collection and

product suppliers to follow practices that encourage recy- cling, help reduce waste and keep materials in use for as long as possible. The amount of material that needs to be recycled from homes has grown in part due to the rise in e-commerce that accelerated during the pandemic. Two-thirds of those surveyed reported an increase in the number of packages they are receiving now, compared to before the COVID-19 crisis. That trend is expected to grow, as about half of respon- dents said they anticipate shopping online more in the fu- ture. Signaling growing awareness of the importance of sus- tainability, more than 40 percent said they are recycling more today than two years ago, and 80 percent said the sustainability of packaging matters to them. Waste is seen as a problem, with two out of three respondents who said they are concerned with the amount of waste they pro- duce.

With the increased appetite for recycling, almost 60 percent of those polled said their recycling bins need to be bigger to fit their needs. About 40 percent said they are run- ning out of room in their recycling bin at least every two weeks. “It’s clear there is real appetite among consumers to recycle but any recycling sys- tem needs to be fit for purpose – e-com- merce has grown, and now we need to see investment in domestic recycling systems grow to match it,” said Keith Tornes, manag- ing director, Paper, Forestry and Recycling North America. While paper-based packaging solutions are easy to recycle by nature, DS Smith is using its Circular Design Metrics to help identify areas in packaging with potential for improvement. This focus on innovation means designing out packaging waste, re- placing plastics and ultimately reducing the amount of material that needs to be pro- cessed in a recycling plant. DS Smith has a circular business model focused on sustainable packaging in which designs are based on a circular economy approach. It is a model that is based on the principles of designing out waste and pollu- tion, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. The poll was conducted October 14-18 with 1,000 respondents, a total that gener- ally has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. DS Smith’s North American operations are based in Atlanta, Georgia with 15 man- ufacturing, paper and recycling facilities to- taling more than 2,000 employees.

Industry leaders in the diecutting, diemaking, printing and package design, foiling, embossing, folding carton, corrugated and specialty markets will be featured at the three-day event. Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.
