Current Affairs: The Paris Attacks

with DDoS and more.

Many of the boys here wanted to know more about the attack in Paris and the reasons why it happened. They researched using The Day online newspaper. All information and facts are taken from there. There has been a lot of publicity about the Paris attacks, but why? I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be publicity, but every day in Syria people are dying, often around twice as many as in Paris. So why is Paris all over the news? On the 3 rd of April 2015 147 people in a Kenyan university were shot dead, this didn’t get nearly as much publicity as the Paris attacks. I had to search for around 5 minutes to find an article on the Kenyan shootings, all the time scrolling through endless recounts of the Paris attack. There are terrorist attacks every day. This ranges from small scale abductions to hundreds of people being massacred, and all for what? Terrorism is not a religion. In no way should we start committing hate crimes towards Muslims, it’s not their fault that their religion’s name is being used for the wrong reasons. I have been to Paris many times, and to imagine the City of Light in darkness is terrible. I remember going up the Eiffel tower, and walking through crowded areas. A café that my parents went to was bombed in the attacks, I was thinking that if my parents had been killed what would I do? My view is that we should support this wonderful city by travelling to it. We shouldn’t shun Paris for things that aren’t their fault. Sam Stewart, 7E Anonymous and IS A hacking group that in the past has hacked governments and authorities has now turned its fire on their worst enemy – IS. This hacking group use Distributed Denial of Service attacks to take websites of the web due to overload. In English this means having too many people all accessing a website at the same time. This causes the website to overload and turn off because too many people are using it at once. However some think that shutting down twitter accounts and turning off websites is not doing any damage to IS. Also Anonymous seem to have been wildly inaccurate, with accusations of scholars and officials as IS members. Also many innocent websites have been attacked by DDoS and the owners tweeted complaints to “Anonymous, GhostSec and any other “hackers,”” requesting that they stop attacking them

The Ghost Security Group is a newer organization with the intent not of taking down websites and twitter accounts but stealing data from them. Both GhostSec and Anonymous claim to have saved lives. Anonymous claim to have reported a planned Tunisia attack, however the authorities that it was supposedly reported to claimed to have no record of the report. GhostSec has a website at ghostsec.org, where you can report suspicious sites. They then attempt to hack these sites to access the data on the websites, potentially revealing terrorist information about where they will attack and when. All in all, we actually have considerable data about IS and other terrorist organisations. Penn Mackintosh, 7W ‘Anonymous’, have declared war against the calamitous and all known- Islamic State. This group of hackers, originally declared war on Islamist Terrorists in January, when Charlie Hebdo employees (employees of a magazine company in France) were murdered by Islamic group, Al Qaeda, that were armed with deadly weapons that murdered 12 people and left 11 seriously injured. However, in a recent video released by Anonymous, this group promised to ‘Defend our values and our freedom’. In addition, they warned IS (short for Islamic State) to ‘expect massive cyberattacks. War is declared. Get prepared.’ The main question isn’t who this ‘Anonymous’ group is, but if we’re against or with them. Personally, I believe that this group should not continue to send these cyber messages to the Islamic State, or any other Islamic group, due to the fact that I believe this will infuriate these terrorists even more, provoking them to bring more mayhem, destruction and sorrow to countries, such as France or maybe even the United Kingdom. Therefore, this so called ‘Anonymous’ group should halt these threats before more devastation strikes for other families. On the other hand, my friends have differing ideas. Sam commented “I believe these hackers should continue so that maybe, just maybe, we will be able to get rid of these suicide bombers, terrorists and trouble-makers and there will be (Continued on page 34) War against the Islamic State Recent hackers, who call themselves
