The Need /// The criticality of aero systems has been steadily increasing due to our growing dependency on the services they provide, such as telecommunications, GPS-based services and imagery. /// Our national security and economic interests rely on the proper functioning and availability of the services provided by the aero-infrastructure. /// Embry-Riddle and the University of Florida request funds for building a research, development and training facility, the Center of Aerospace Resilience (CAR). /// There are hundreds of cybersecurity and data analytics centers across the nation. There is currently no center that focuses on cybersecurity and data analytics in the context of aviation and aerospace. /// The proposed CAR will offer critical research opportunities and capacities for confronting the cyber threats facing Florida’s and the nation’s aero systems and supporting infrastructures while offering solutions to challenges in this domain through data analytics. Who The University of Florida is a world-class institution and has a strong presence in cybersecurity research as well as data analytics. Embry-Riddle’s core competency in aero systems in general and cybersecurity challenges in these systems in particular, complemented by the traditional cybersecurity expertise of UF, produces a strong and competitive set of capabilities to address cybersecurity challenges confronting aero systems. These two universities bring a diverse set of specialized and overlapping cybersecurity and data analytics expertise together to make the proposed CAR not only first of its kind but also a success. /// Embry-Riddle will partner with the University of Florida through the proposed CAR for addressing the challenges in the aero domain and providing training for workforce development. Where Due to its vicinity to Florida’s Space Coast, Daytona Beach and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University offers the ideal location and expertise to host the proposed CAR.

Previous Funding /// The State of Florida has generously contributed to the John Mica Engineering and Innovation Complex (MicaPlex) and to the subsonic wind tunnel. /// Both of these facilities have been success stories for economic development in the region through enabling startups or bringing established business from out of state to the area. MicaPlex hosts 15 regional, national and international companies. MicaPlex industry partners and the wind tunnel already brought in $10M in grants to the area. The Impact The CAR will be the nexus of innovation for next- generation aero technologies and development of solutions to current and future industry challenges. The facility will host Embry-Riddle experts in AI, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Software and Hardware, cultivating the necessary competency for meeting industry needs. /// The CAR will help addressing challenges facing Florida’s and our nation’s aero-systems and infrastructures through collaborating with industry, government and U.S. military. /// An estimated 1,500 students will be directly involved in educational and research projects conducted in the proposed facility, resulting in the creation of a pipeline of highly-skilled graduates who will be practically equipped to fill new jobs created through the continuing growth in the Florida aero industry. /// The CAR will also be used for workforce development and to train professionals, such as Aircraft Mechanics and FAA employees, through various scenarios that can be implemented on site. /// The CAR will contribute to meeting the need for filling over 2000 Aero jobs that are currently open in Florida. /// CAR will benefit aviation and aerospace companies that are already located in Florida through the expertise and solutions it offers. /// CAR researchers will attract additional aviation and aerospace-related businesses to the area. /// Technologies developed at the CAR can be licensed to partner companies located in Florida, potentially in MicaPlex, for commercialization. /// CAR will ignite a series of high-paying and highly-skilled employment opportunities in Florida. /// The CAR will pave the way for developing Florida’s space-cyber capability, which will create collaboration opportunities with the Space Command.

The proposed Center of Aerospace Resilience is expected to amplify Embry-Riddle’s contribution to the economic development of the Region.
