Taxpayers issue apology for “questions”

in our province and country.” “However, we understand that the in- terpretation of words we use lies as much within ourselves as within the dictionary. Some interpretations, which we all place on words, can be misleading to ourselves and to others. Some people may construe the

language in the posters to be inflammatory and derogatory, thus unduly diminishing the reputation of the pro-Mayor, councillors and employees of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge. Consequently, as requested, we hereby apologize without reserve for the tone used in the questions and we retract the offen-

sive words, in particular the words ‘fraud’ and ‘illegally’. It was certainly not our intent to discredit the reputation of any member of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge Council, staff or employees, but simply to hold you account- able for your actions. In the future, we shall endeavour to focus strictly on the facts.”

CALUMET | Insisting that they did not mean to defame anyone, two Grenville- sur-la-Rouge taxpayers have publicly apologized for implying that municipal employees and four council members accepted the misappropriation of public funds. In a November 12 letter submitted at a re- cent council meeting, Robin Andrews and Norman Bates wrote, “We readily apologize for our choice of words used on the posters placed on the walls of Centre Paul-Bougie at the council meeting August 14, 2012.” The posters contained questions that tar- geted Deputy Mayor Diane Monette, Coun- cillors Noël Baril, Alain Carrière and Pierre Lessard, as well as staff members. Prior to the start of the August 14 meet- ing, several banners had been placed on the walls of the community centre. One of the banner asked if the four councillors “consider $128 of fraud to be not significant or important? If yes, how much fraudulent money do they consider as significant/im- portant?” Another asked: “Is it true that staff and/or councillors who illegally use public money will be held accountable for returning that money?” Baril told Andrews to remove the ban- ners. “Take down that propaganda that shows a lack of respect towards council,” said Baril. “You are accusing me of fraud?” The coun- cillor challenged Andrews to provide evi- dence to back up his claim. Andrews replied: “It is a question, not a statement.” However, since then, the councillors and employees have demanded a retraction. In their letter, Andrews and Bates write: “ We don’t think anyone should have to apologize for exercising the right of free speech. During the municipal council meetings, the council invites the public to ask their questions at question period. This gives the public the opportunity to raise questions of concern and express them publicly. The council in turn has an obliga- tion to respond to these questions truth- fully and transparently. This process is one of the ways that we keep democracy strong
