Atlas PT. March Newsletter

A January trip to Belize? Yes, please! Our team here at Atlas has been busy! Lauren and her husband Brent took a trip to San Pedro, Belize. Lauren got to ride co-pilot on a hopper flight to the island and was relieved that it was smooth-sailing on the tiny aircraft. While on vacation, they snorkeled with fish, sting rays, eels, and they even swam with sharks! According to Lauren, there were so many fish that it was like swimming in an aquarium! It was what she was looking forward to most, and it did not disappoint!

They also had the chance to climb the Mayan Ruins, and it was a journey in itself just to get there – three boats and one bus ride through the rainforest! Lauren was very excited that they found somewhere to watch the Eagles vs. Bears NFL Playoff game, and they even managed to meet a few Philadelphia fans there. Overall, they had a great trip but were excited to return home to their two dogs, Nymeria and Kiana.

We’ve also been celebrating some exciting milestones here at Atlas PT! Happy 12th anniversary to TJ and me. We sellebrated that Saturday by visiting downtown Annapolis during the beginning of a snow storm. Main Street was deserted! We pulled into a parking spot, had an empty table next to us at Joss, and had a fun night out! The next day we went sledding three different times in the six inches of snow that had fallen. TJ and I attended the quarterly conference for small PT clinics, this time in Orlando. We didn’t venture out of the huge hotel that whole weekend. The girls would have been so sad if we left them

at home while we were hanging out with all their Disney friends! Another exciting milestone – Happy 5th birthday to Kathryn! She chose lunch at the “fire restaurant” (Hibachi Grill) where they cook your food in front of you. We opened presents, cracked open an Elena piñata, and ate the five-layer Elena cake that Grammy made at Gran and PopPop’s. Samantha and TJ attended the Daddy Daughter dance at her school that weekend, as well. They had fun, and at the end when there was someone making a snow angel out of glitter on the floor, that was their cue to go out for an after-dance bite!

March 2019

Toward the end of January, we visited the beach near TJ’s other job, and took a walk along the frozen shore lines of the Bay and Magothy River! It was very cool and strange to see all the ice where you’re used to seeing sand and surf! TJ, Rebekah, and I attended the annual American Physical Therapy Association conference this year for different educational and networking opportunities. It was held in Washington D.C. and approximately 17,000 people were in attendance. Rebekah attended a Recognition Ceremony for newly certified clinical specialists. She was one of 1,475 newly certified specialists in Orthopedics

in 2018. She studied hard and enhanced her skills in order to earn this special certification prior to starting with Atlas last Spring. Rebekah and I also got to meet up with several old classmates while we were at a University of Delaware alumni event! My PT class had a great turn-out for the alumni reception (8 out of 32 who completed the program) and Bekah had fun seeing some friends and co-workers she worked with at Delaware up until last Winter. We’ve been very busy here at Atlas PT, but we’ve been having a blast! What have you been up to? - Dr. Laura Sanner, Founder of Atlas PT

Tasty Recipe

Mexican Quinoa Stuffed Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients • 2 large sweet potatoes • 1 tbsp olive oil

Name:

• 1 tsp cumin • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika • Sea salt to taste

“I injured my shoulder kayaking in 4-6 ft. surf. Initially, I noticed shoulder pain and a decrease in my kayaking performance. Over the course of several weeks, I was unable to do many activities at the gym without pain. Lifting my arm overhead was painful. I found myself using my non-dominant arm to open cabinets, retrieve items, and open doors. When my shoulder discomfort reached a point that it was not only affecting my kayaking and workouts but everyday activities, it was time to seek help. An MRI showed a rotator cuff tear. Since I was familiar with Atlas PT from a shoulder workshop at my gym, they were my first choice. I was anxious to get back to normal activity ASAP. We started out slow to get rid of pain and increase ROM. As those progressed, both PT’s gave me exercises to help improve strength and proper shoulder positioning. The staff helped me push myself as hard as I wanted to go within reason. After three months, I am able to do most activities without pain. My daily activities have returned to near-normal, and I look forward to testing the waters again in the near future. Thanks to the entire staff for guidance and support.” - Denise P. 5 6 7 Name: 1 2 3 4

Hi!

Over the past 2 years, Dr. Sam, the entire Atlas Team, and I have been hosting workshops here at Atlas Physical Therapy to help educate the community about your body and common ailments, and what we have found is disturbing. We are sick and unhealthy and not properly educated. Our loved ones are addicted to narcotics, getting surgeries, getting painful injections, paying for expensive diagnostic testing BEFORE exhausting all other natural treatment options first. The image below should look familiar from school…think food pyramid. More of the good stuff on the bottom…and less of the bad stuff on top. As you can see the NOW Pyramid is not good. There’s no reason it should be this way. We have access to the most amazing healthcare in the world. We are sicker than we’ve ever been, and our life expectancy is dropping. The next generation isn’t going to live as long as we are. We NEED to get to the Pyramid on the right, the FUTURE. Take all the conservative care first then only after that has been exhausted move up the Pyramid to more invasive strategies and only surgery as a last resort. To take the best care of ourselves and our loved ones it NEEDS to be the other way around.

We are Flipping the Pyramid!

(See how you can help flip the pyramid on the other side of this insert!)

CALLING ALL ATLAS FAMILY!

We are going on the road to FLIP THE PYRAMID. Our mission is a really big one, but we think KNOW we can do it. Who are we doing this for?

We are doing this for:

• Your gym buddy • Your grandparents • You!

• Your husband • Your wife • Your friend • Your coworker

• Your fellow church member • Your neighbor • Your child

• Your mother • Your father • Your brother • Your sister

How can you help? Are you a member of a special group? Attend church? Own a business? Part of a medical group, like a Stroke Club? Participate in a group exercise program? Go to a gym? Part of a parenting group, PTA, or school? Play or have children on a sports team? Participate in your Homeowners Association? Then you can help! All we need you to do is to make a simple introduction. To someone in the group you’re a part of. From there we can see how we can help educate members in your group and Flip The Pyramid one small group at a time.

Please email me directly at laura@iwantpt.com or call 410.762.2124 and leave a message for me at the office

Dedicated to our health,

Laura
