Bike theft leads to marijuana charges A local Cornwall man thought he could simply walk out of a store with a bicycle without paying. Taylor Bergeron, 24, of Cornwall, was arrested on March 11 and charged with theft under $5000, possession of marijuana and breach of two probation orders for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on March 9, the man entered a Ninth Street store and removed a bicycle making no attempt to pay for the bicycle as he left the store. On March 11 the police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation, the man was spotted at the Cornwall Square and taken into custody. During this time he was found to be in possession of marijuana and was charged accordingly. He was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing. Reduced load limits on roads The City of Cornwall will be imposing several reduced load limits from March 18 to May 15. The reduced load limits are necessary in order to preserve the integrity of certain roads during the spring thaw period. Similar restrictions are in place on select roads in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. The streets that are subject to the reduced load limits include South Branch Road from Pitt Street to Boundary Road, Cornwall Cen- tre Road from Pitt Street to St. Andrews Road (Highway 138), Cornwall Centre Road from Brookdale Avenue to City Landfill site entrance, McConnell Avenue from South Branch Road to Highway 401, Tenth Street East from Boundary Road to Virginia Drive and Rich- mond Drive from Vincent Massey Drive north to the city limit. Watch where you’re walking Distracted drivers have long been the cause of numerous accidents. The driver of amotor vehicle on a cell phone, texting, applying make-up or anything else that makes them look anywhere else than the road can be dangerous and even fatal; but what about a distracted pedestrian? Current research suggests that Mp3, Smartphones, handheld computers and cell phone-using pedestrians walk slower and are less likely to notice other objects in their environment, even if they are prominent. Distracted walking isn’t illegal in Cornwall, there is no fine, no ticket, but pedestrians found talking on their phone or using other devices as they cross the street could expect a lecture on safety. As per the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario Pedestrian Death Review, 2010, approximately 20% of pedestrians may have had some form of distraction, such as using a cell phone, MP3 player or other mobile de- vice at the time of the fatal accident.

Kid’s Korner, le magasin de jouets sur la rue Pitt à Cornwall, a reçu le prix de Petite entreprise de l’année par la Chambre de commerce de Cornwall. « Recevoir ce prix est un grand honneur, ont exprimé les propriétaires du commerce, Kevin et Les- lie Ouderkirk. Nous sommes reconnais- sants envers les habitants de Cornwall qui nous soutiennent depuis le début. » En plus d’offrir une vaste sélection de jouets éducatifs depuis plus de 20 ans, les Ouderkirk ont investi une importante som- me d’argent en 2014 pour revitaliser la fa- çade extérieure de leur magasin.
