NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE
The purpose of this notice is to inform you that the municipal Council of The Nation Municipality has the intention to designate the property, including the lands and buildings located at the following municipal address, as a property of cultural heritage value or interest under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act , R.S.O. 1990, chapter O.18.

Déclaration de la valeur ou du caractère sur le plan patrimoine culturel En 1859 l’un des premiers colons, M Bernard Lemieux, donne un terrain de huit arpents et construit une première chapelle, à ses frais, de soixante quatre pieds de long sur trente-six de large et dix sept de haut, tout en fournissant tous les objets nécessaires au culte. Mgr Guigues bénit celle-ci le 26 octobre 1867, pour remercier le généreux donateur, Mgr inscrit la paroisse sous le vocable de Saint Bernard en l’honneur du saint patron de Lemieux. Il faudra attendre en 1885, sous le ministère de l’abbé Ulric Magnan (décédé 2 juillet 1888 et inhumé au sous-sol de l’église sous l’autel) pour entreprendre la construction de la belle église en pierre, qui sera bénite par Mgr Duhamel le 9 décembre 1886. L’église de style romain est construite de 1885 à 1886, une vaste et haute construction en pierre, de cent vingt pieds de long sur cinquante-cinq de large ave une sacristie de quarante-huit par trente pieds de largeur. Les murs extérieurs sont faits de pierres, provenant de la propriété de M. Willy MacLeod, concession 9 Saint-Isidore. Les paroissiens ont travaillés durant trois années, même pendant l’hiver, afin d’avoir suffisamment de pierres pour le revêtement de l’église. Un clocher composé de deux lanternes contient trois cloches (1904) qui sont encore actionnées par des câbles. Les peintures et les fresques ont été peintes par les célèbres décorateurs d’église, François-Edouard Meloche et Toussaint-Xénophon Renaud associés, de 1881 à 1896. Toute la voûte et le haut des autels sont ornés de peintures aux couleurs pastel où l’on y retrouve des motifs floraux et des harpes. Les planchers sont de bois franc en érable et merisier de 7/8 d’épaisseur et de 2 ½ de largeur.
Declaration of value of cultural heritage or character In 1859, one of the first settlers, Mr. Bernard Lemieux, donated eight acres to the parish and built the first chapel, at his own cost, measuring sixty-four feet long by thirty-six feet wide and seventeen feet high; he also supplied all of the articles necessary for worship. On October 26, 1867, Mgr. Guigues blessed the church and to thank the donor, he named the church after Saint Bernard, the patron Saint of Lemieux. It was only in 1885, under the direction of Abbot Ulric Magnan (deceased on July 2, 1888 and buried in the basement of the church, directly under the altar), that the construction of the beautiful church in stone began. It was blessed by Mgr. Duhamel on December 9, 1886. The Roman style church was constructed from 1885 to 1886. The large and high stone building was one hundred and twenty feet long and fifty-five feet wide, and featured a sacristy of forty-eight feet by thirty feet wide. The exterior walls were made of stone, supplied by the property of Mr. Willy MacLeod on Concession 9 in St-Isidore. The parishioners worked for three years, even during the winter, in order to take enough stone for the church. The bell tower is made of two lanterns and contains three bells (1904), which are still operated by cables today. The paintings and frescoes were painted by the famous church decorators François-Edouard Meloche and Toussaint- Xénophon Renaud Associates, from 1881 to 1896. The entire vaulted ceiling and tops of the altars were decorated with pastel paintings featuring floral motifs and harps. The floors are hardwood made frommaple and cherry trees and are 7/8 thick and 2 ½ wide.
L’église est enjolivée par quatorze colonnes corinthiennes au fini marbré et son parquet est de bois franc. La lampe du sanctuaire (remplacée suite à un vol) est toujours suspendue dans le choeur comme à l’époque.
The church is further decorated with fourteen Corinthian columns finished in marble and the parquet is hardwood. The sanctuary lamp (replaced after a robbery) still hangs above the choir as it did at the time.

Toute personne peut, dans les trente jours qui suivent la date de publication de l’avis d’intention, déposer à la greffière, un avis faisant part de son objection au projet de désignation du bien, ainsi qu’un énoncé des raisons motivant cette opposition et de tous les faits pertinents.

Any person may file a notice of objection to this designation of the Property, their statement of reasons for their opposition and all relevant facts with the Clerk within 30 days of the publication of this notice of intent.
