Senior School Visiting Artist Irena Shumatora

Last week, we were overjoyed to welcome Ukrainian artist Irena Shmatova to the art department Irena presented her sketchbooks, telling very real yet comical stories to give our pupils a taste of how she works and where her inspiration comes from. She explained how she's been using her drawings to explain visually to her young son what is happening in their country at the moment, and why they have to go somewhere else to keep safe. Irena's drawings are full of intricate patterns and characters that make you smile and

marvel at her ability to create such wonderful and clever illustrations. This was part of the inspiration for our Festival of Arts competition and I feel that the pupils really were motivated to now go on to create their own work from this session.

The visit is part of the inspiration for our Festival of Arts competition, and the pupils are now feeling very motivated to create their own work after this inspiring session - A huge thank you to Irena!

Outdoor Education Update

The 35 and 45 teams were training again on Dartmoor last Sunday. They were completing a linear walk between Okehampton and Postbridge to help them familiarise themselves with the Eastern side of the moor. The weather was really challenging with snow, rain, hail, sleet and sunshine! River crossings were therefore difficult as was navigation at times.

Pupils quickly learned that Dartmoor can be a very inhospitable place! They got the opportunity to really test their poor weather kit and most will be taking more layers and different gloves next time. Overall, it was a very valuable experience for the group and I was incredibly impressed with how positively they approached the day, despite the poor conditions. Well done to All.
