It has been a championship season all year on the court for the Saint Francis Xavier Falcons. All of it a prelude to this week when they go for their slamdunk shot at a provincial title in high school basketball. TheSFXseniorboysareinSt.Catherines atRidleyCollegefortheOntarioFederation of Secondary School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships in single-A basketball. It is a first for Saint Francis Xavier Catholic High School as past years have seen the school make the Eastern regionals in boys basketball but never get tagged for a provincial challenge. “They were very proud and excited,” said Coach David MacKinnon, following theFalconsqualifyingfortheOFSAA,“and ready to face the challenge ahead of bringing back a provincial title.” Coach MacKinnon said the semi-final match against Tagwi in the Eastern Onta- rio Secondary School Athletic Associations (EOSSAA) championship last month was the real key game for the Falcons. “The semi decided who was going to OFSAA.” SFX handed Tagwi a loss then went on to force Renfrew District to fight for an 11- point win that left Renfrew as the lead rep for Eastern Ontario at OFSAA and SFX as the strong runner-up entry for the region. The OFSAA session began March 5 and the report from Monday’s opening round of games had SFX taking down Kapuskasing District High School 46-41

Top shooters for the Falcons were Christopher MacDonald with 15 points and nine rebounds while his fellow co-captains Justin Diederich and Blake Rennick each scored 10 points with eight rebounds for Diederich and four for Rennick. Coach MacKinnon said speed is the Falcons’ strength and teamwork the main lesson they learned during past seasons that they are taking with them to OFSAA. “When this all comes together, we are successful,” he said. During one of the last practice sessions before the teamheaded off to St. Catherines, Diederich and McDonald expressed optimism about the Falcons’ chances. “We’re making history,” said McDonald. “What we need to rely on is our sense of chemistry,” said Diederich. “We’ve been playing together for five years now.”
