LARGE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL DISTRICT ENERGY

from the University of Halmstad. The different links in the district energy distribution net have been demonstrated by visits to WasteHeat Aarhus, Logstor, Danfoss, Kamstrup, Dong and Brædstrup. The red line in the course was a case study, where the students had to design the enlargement of the district energy network at the local utility company Skanderborg-Hørning Forsyning. Calculations included were cost, heat loss, energy- and financial savings plus pros and cons in using booster heat pumps and low temperature district energy in the parcellation.
Endorsements from former participants have resulted in a large number of qualified candidates for the 2012 Summer School District Energy, held at Aarhus University, School of Engineering 50 students had applied for this year’s summer school. This gave the organizers the opportunity to select 25 qualified participants from 11 countries, who during their studies have had a focus on energy technologies. These are the students who will participate in designing the energy system of tomorrow, and Summer School District energy is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the capability and profitability of the district energy system. WE NEED TO TAKE IT FROM THE TOP It is well known that there is a lack of focus on district energy in the higher education system. Consequently the organizers have chosen to do an introductory course – as had been the case in early years. During the two week course, the students received theoretical and practical introductions to the technological, economical and commercial issues of designing a district energy system. The student have been taught by Jens Vestergård from Aarhus University, Morten Hofmeister from DEDC, Flemming Hammer from Cowi and Svend Werner
This means that the students have had an opportunity to learn from experienced district energy engineers.
BETTER ACCESS TO KNOWLEDGE It is this introductory angle that has brought the students to Denmark. Many of the students have had the most general knowledge of the existence of district energy, but they have had a hard time finding further information. “We have the district energy technology” says Cordova Cordova, who has come all the way from Indonesia. “But we have no practical experience, as there is no district energy
