Building costs on the rise in Clarence-Rockland GREGGCHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca reserve fund will be empty by the end of 2013 after compensating for all expected inflationary costs this year.
Part of the reason for the construction rates increase is to avoid a potential deficit situation for the building department’s own inspection and maintenance programs and the city’s overall budget situation. The department report noted that with-
out the fee rates increase, the city could face a $130,000 deficit at the end of the year for its own planning program budget. Daily operation costs and staff salaries have in- creased each year since the last time the fee rate structure was set and the department’s
The report also noted that the city needs to fill a new inspector/investigator post to get ahead on its list of active and legal files.
ROCKLAND | It will cost more to build in the City of Clarence-Rockland. The municipal planning department has a new construction and building bylaw, complete with a list of increased fees, in anticipation of the spring construction sea- son. The city’s Planning Director Michael Michaud does not anticipate any problems with the local building sector in accepting the new fee structure. “We’ve already had a meeting with devel- opers,”Michaud told council during a March 6 public meeting, “and they seem okay with it.”

L’ORIGNAL | This summer it’s the Amazing Eight on water if Mayor René Berthiaume gets any takers to his challenge for the Ot- tawa River Festival. Berthiaume is taking full advantage of his positions as warden this year for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) and also mayor of Hawkesbury, the host community for the power boat races that are part of the annual regional festival. He is challenging
his fellow Prescott-Russell mayors to field teams for the Run the Wave recreational re- lay race that is part of the river festival and serves as a fundraiser for prostate cancer research. “Ride on skis, innertubes, anything,” Ber- thiaume said, grinning, during the March 6 committee of the whole session for the UCPR council. “We’ll see who raises the most money.”
There was a very brief discussion about whether any or all of the mayors who ac- cepted the challenge should wear Speedo swimwear during their leg of the relay race. General consensus was that might hurt more than help with the fundraising. The Ottawa River Festival is a three-day regional event over the Canada Day long weekend for all communities in Prescott- Russell which border the Ottawa River.
