MMU - Principal Mechanical Engineer

The role Liaise with a variety of local authority, government officials and insurance inspectors to ensure the strict compliance with statutory requirements and insurers recommendations. Implement and manage systems which will ensure the University meets its statutory obligations in relation to the Construction Design Management Regulations (CDM), assuming the role of coordinator when required. Support the Head of Estates Infrastructure in assisting and advising Deans/Heads of Department in discharging their responsibilities under Health and Safety legislation and relevant University policies generally. Staff Management, Development & Training Manage the organisation, deployment and effective performance of the Mechanical section Engineering staff and contractors within your area of responsibility, assisting the other Building Service Managers using concurrent engineering practices development and review. Develop and implement appropriate programmes of staff development and training activity, taking account of both institutional and individual requirements. Work with the Head of Estates Infrastructure to set team objectives that align with wider strategic objectives and that enable team members to contribute to and identify with collective goals. Develop and promote professional standards and a collaborative style of working across the Estates Department and with other support services. Manage all aspects of staff recruitment, selection and induction, in a manner that is consistent with the University’s Human Resources policies and procedures. Manage the PDR process, undertaking individual PDRs for staff, ensuring that staff development and training activity is properly monitored and evaluated, in line with the University PDR process. Oversee the monitoring of annual leave, staff sickness and absence. You will be required to work flexibly across the University estate, at any of its locations, and may therefore occasionally be required to drive one of the University vehicles. To be part of the Estates Directorate’s emergency call out plan, undertaking duties commensurate with the role at times outside of normal working hours, for which recompense will be made. You will ensure that appropriate management systems and procedures are in place to meet your health and safety duties and responsibilities contained within the University’s health and safety policy. In particular you will ensure that appropriate risk assessments are carried out in respect of significant hazards and that safety inspections are undertaken on at least an annual cycle in each workplace under your control. You are responsible for applying the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy in your own area of responsibility and in your general conduct. You are expected to co-operate with the PDR process, engaging in the setting of objectives in order to assist in the monitoring of performance and the development of the individual. You will assess the training and development needs of each member of staff under your control to ensure they are adequately supported in relation to their work responsibilities. Such other relevant duties commensurate with the grade of the post as may be assigned by the Manager in agreement with you. Such agreement should not be unreasonably withheld. Deputising for Head of Section as required You may be required to undertake a specific Health & Safety role, commensurate with your grade, to support the University in meeting its statutory Health & Safety obligations. This could include acting as a DSE Assessor, First Aider, Fire Marshall or Departmental Safety Co- ordinator. The allocation of such roles will be subject to the provision of appropriate training and assessment of competence. You may, with reasonable notice, be required to work at any of the Manchester Metropolitan University sites. You are responsible for assessing and managing risk for all elements of work within your own area/team and for ensuring effective risk management processes are in place. You have the responsibility to engage with the University’s commitment to Environmental Sustainability in order to reduce its waste, energy consumption and carbon footprint. You have a responsibility to promote high levels of customer care within your own areas of work.
