Sara Lauzon just won’t give up!

“It all started when I realized that I hadn’t updated the Judge James O’Reilly Face- book page in quite some time,” explains the University of Ottawa student. “I was won- dering what to do with it when I spotted my many binders full of old postcards and photographs.” With that, the hard-working history lover went about scanning them and publishing them on the social media website, without truly thinking it would take Cornwall by storm. Luckily for her, it did. “It was crazy, people from all over the city shared certain pictures and everyone seemed to talk about them,” said the proud young woman. “Every day since I first start- ed doing this, people on the street actually ask me so many questions regarding what I publish on the page. I love it!” The Judge James O’Reilly page, which boasts 244 friends as of the second week of January, has been steadily growing, attract- ing not only Cornwall’s older population, in search of nostalgia, but also younger indi- viduals who want to admire what the ma- jestic city once looked like. Pictures range from Pitt Street in the 1800’s, to the now demolished Capitol The- atre, as well as the extinct Cornwall canal. “I remember being there for movies and being so captivated by the details, even in the dark, that I would miss half the movie looking around”, expressed Pete Parent, who used to attend screenings at the Capi- tol Theatre. The House of Refuge Although uploading pictures of Corn- wall has taken up some of her time, Lauzon claims that her prior project, which is to research the 906 inmates who roamed the halls of the building, is still her main priority. “Every one of these inmates has a story to tell,” she says. “Most are sad, but some are very interesting.” Take the case of Duncan Mckimon for example; a man whose fate will forever be linked to the House of Refuge. Having been received at the establishment at the age of 65, the man had tried to escape multiple times, after which he would get caught and sent back shortly after. On one occasion, however, while on one of his many esca- pades, Mckimon was struck and killed by a train. In a last twist of faith, his body was buried on the House’s property. As she reads from a list of curious cases she has uncovered so far, one can truly ad- mire the young woman’s passion for giving a voice to those who never had one. “I know that there were a total of 906 inmates who lived at the House,” she explains. “So far I’ve researched 163 of them. I just can’t stop there!” More information on Sara Lauzon’s prior or current projects is available on her web- site at www.saraloveshistory.com.

CORNWALL | In her latest project, Corn- wall’s little historian has realized that his- tory does bring a community closer. As if she needed further proof, while being in- terviewed, she was approached by a man she had never met before who handed her a USB key containing several old pictures of Cornwall. “I was told I could find you here,” he said. With her usual smile, she took the device and thanked him as he made his way out. “It’s great’, explained a laughing Lauzon. “People send me old pictures of Cornwall and I then put them on my Facebook page for everyone to see.” The soon- to-be history graduate has tackled yet another project, all the while still researching the House of Refuge and its many inmates. communautaire Le lien community link The Centre Charles-Émile-Claude Les Bons Vivants sont au Centre Charles-Émile-Claude le samedi, 1er février de 19 h à 21 h.
