A B U N DA N C E M E NTA L I T Y THE The Principle That Will Change Your Business and Your Life

He went on to explain the definition of the abundance mentality. It’s a term coined by Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People® . The abundance mentality is a business concept in which a person believes that there are enough resources and successes to share with others.

Many times, leaders come in from other companies and say, “I can’t believe you’re helping me and not trying to compete against me.” I reply, “It’s different here – it’s all for one and one for all, bud. No one gets left behind with Melaleuca. You win and we all win.”

Those with an abundance mindset believe that today’s  short-term pain, sacrifice, and investment in time, energy,

The years have ticked by since then, and embracing the abundance mentality has allowed me to reach beyond

and money will eventually bring long-term growth, blessings, and success. They also believe that another’s success doesn’t diminish their own. Everyone can succeed. Everyone can have a piece of the pie. When you build your business with an abundance mindset,

my personals and help shape the culture of the company. This abundance mentality is a large part of what makes Melaleuca different as a company and it definitely affects the kind of people we attract. In 2009, National Director Paulette Cheverie and I started a weekly training call named the Leadership Connection, primarily to help our personal leaders

People with a scarcity mentality tend to see everything in terms of win-lose. There is only so much; and if someone else has it, that means there will be less for me. The more principle-centered we become, the more we develop an abundance mentality, the more we are genuinely happy for the successes, well-being, achievements, recognition, and good fortune of other people. We believe their success adds to…rather than detracts from…our lives. – Stephen Covey

i, like most businesspeople, came to Melaleuca with ambitionand a strong competitive spirit. Those who know my story know I was financially broke when I enrolled and it was my focus to make as much money as I could – as quickly as I could. I enrolled along with Corporate Director 7 Alan Pariser, National Director 7 Tom Pisano, and Executive Director 9 Nona Pione the week of Christmas 1991. We linked arms on our journey to each make $10,000 a month. We were very dedicated to each other. It wasn’t so much that I didn’t want to help anyone outside my team, it was more that my focus wasn’t there. As I started reaching my goals and my business began thriving, I began traveling on behalf of the company to many locations to train and coach others for the greater good. Honestly, I was feeling a bit stretched. It was on one of those trips that I found myself complaining to Melaleuca President McKay Christensen. We were traveling on a 3-hour flight from one meeting to another, for yet another training for Marketing Executives not in my organization, and as I sat on my pity pot

you understand that, basically, what goes

around comes around. You understand that the more people you help in this world without a direct benefit, the more you will benefit in the long run in ways you can’t imagine. Well, that was the first time I had ever heard anything like that. I began to understand that if I had the power to teach, then why not teach everyone (no matter whose organization they’re in)? My teaching helps the company as a whole and we are all interconnected. We are one company. As I thought more about what McKay was teaching me that day, I began to think more about our Mission Statement: To Enhance the Lives of Those We Touch by Helping People Reach Their GoalsSM. It doesn’t say to enhance the lives only in my organization until my life is enhanced enough. That conversation was one of the tipping points in my life and business. My perspective changed. It no longer mattered whose team a person was on because we are all on the same team. If someone needed help, then I would help them. No matter how much money you make (or don’t make) or what status you are, you can be generous with what you have. Maybe it’s flying across the country to help with a training. Maybe it’s being willing to take a call from anyone who needs it, whether they’re in your organization or not. Help where you can. Don’t hoard your time, knowledge, and money. Share abundantly because you know it all comes back.

rally the troops. By spring 2010, we decided to open it up to others. We wanted to help anyone and everyone! It didn’t cost any extra time or money, so why not?

CORPORATE DIRECTOR 9 ED BESTOSO

A Rising Tide Lifts All Ships

“Throughout his time at Melaleuca, I have seen Ed operate with an abundance mentality. He helps others who are not in his group. He welcomes others to his Overviews. He even helps others not on his team complete their paperwork and start shopping. I have seen him, many times, travel at his own expense to do meetings for Melaleuca Marketing Executives all over the country. It is no surprise to me that Ed has the largest business in Melaleuca, and that he has more Senior, Executive, and National Directors in his business than any other. An abundant leader attracts others. That is certainly true of Ed.”

complaining, McKay said, “Ed, you need to understand the abundance mentality.”
