Hood Container Corporation. Hodges has nearly 50 years in the industry and has held roles at many major companies, but he found his home at Hood Container. Inspired by a high school teacher’s passion for chem- istry, Hodges went to Georgia Tech to become a chemical engineer. After graduation, he followed in his father’s foot- steps and began working at Union Camp Corp., where he was given his first real taste of the pulp and paper industry. In this episode, he shares his concerns about work- force development, how leadership expectations have changed, and what it means to truly build a company cul- ture and hold everyone accountable to it. “Charlie has always had a well-deserved reputation as one of the smart guys in our industry.” said AICC Presi- dent Mike D’Angelo. “This edition of Breaking Down Boxes gives real insight as to why Charlie has earned that repu- tation. What an incredible and applicable lesson in leader- ship, history, and humility.” In addition to his forward-looking ideas, Hodges shares a fascinating history of the industry. ISM: Manufacturing Contracts For 7th Consecutive Month

“The Production Index reading of 51.1 percent is a 2.2-percentage point increase compared to April's figure of 48.9 percent. The Prices Index registered 44.2 percent, down 9 percentage points compared to the April figure of 53.2 percent. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 37.5 percent, 5.6 percentage points lower than the April reading of 43.1 percent. “The Employment Index indicated another month of ex- pansion, registering 51.4 percent, up 1.2 percentage points from April's reading of 50.2 percent. The Supplier Deliv- eries Index figure of 43.5 percent is 1.1 percentage points lower than the 44.6 percent recorded in April; this is the index's lowest reading since March 2009 (43.2 percent). “The Inventories Index dropped 0.5 percentage point to 45.8 percent; the April reading was 46.3 percent. The New Export Orders Index reading of 50 percent is 0.2 per- centage point higher than April's figure of 49.8 percent The Imports Index remained in contraction territory, reg-

The Institute for Supply Management announced that economic activity in the manufacturing sector contract- ed in May for the seventh consecutive month following a 28-month period of growth, say the nation's supply execu- tives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business. The report was issued on June 1 by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Management: “The May Manufacturing PMI registered 46.9 percent, 0.2 percentage point lower than the 47.1 percent recorded in April. Regarding the overall economy, this figure indi- cates a sixth month of contraction after a 30-month period of expansion. The New Orders Index remained in contrac- tion territory at 42.6 percent, 3.1 percentage points lower than the figure of 45.7 percent recorded in April.

istering 47.3 percent, 2.6 percentage points lower the 49.9 percent reported in April. “The U.S. manufacturing sector shrank again, with the Manufacturing PMI losing a bit of ground compared to the previous month, indicating a faster rate of contraction. The May composite index reading reflects companies continuing to manage outputs to better match demand for the first half of 2023 and prepare for growth in the late summer/early fall period. However, there is clearly more business uncertainty in May. “Demand eased again, with the (1) New Orders Index contracting at a faster rate, (2) New Export Orders Index slightly improving to 50 percent, (3) Customers' Inventories In- dex persisting at the low end of 'too high' territory, a negative for future production and (4) Backlog of Orders Index dropping to a level not seen since the Great Recession. “Output/Consumption (measured by the Production and Employment indexes) was positive, with a combined 3.4-percentage point upward impact on the Manufacturing PMI calculation. “The Employment Index expanded for the second month (and at a faster rate) af- ter two months of contraction, and the Pro- duction Index moved back into expansion territory. Regarding employment, panelists' comments continue to indicate near equal levels of activity toward expanding and con- tracting head counts at their companies, amid mixed sentiment about when signifi- cant growth will return. Inputs — defined as supplier deliveries, inventories, prices and imports — continue to accommodate future demand growth.” Visit www.ismworld.org for more.

W.E. Roberts Invests In eProductivity Software’s Escada Process Control Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based W.E. Roberts announced investing in eProductivity Software Escada Profile pro- cess control and Syncro corrugator control solutions to enhance its sustainability and efficiency efforts. The new installation is planned to go live in October 2023. With a commitment to reducing waste and energy consumption while improving efficiency, W.E. Roberts has partnered with ePS Escada to automate its corrugator and streamline its operations by implementing Escada’s Profile and Syncro solutions. “With a choice of investing in a new corrugator or using our existing machine and enhancing its capabilities with technology, we decided to go the latter route,” said Ben Wilks, Operations Director, W.E. Roberts. “We’d had pre- vious experience with Escada on an older corrugator and knew its benefits, so it was the clear choice to proceed with a proven, trusted method.” “At W.E. Roberts, we are committed to driving sustain- ability and efficiency efforts in our industry,” said Richard Puffette, Financial Director, W.E. Roberts. “We believe that our investment in Escada’s Profile, process control, and Syncro corrugator control solutions will help us achieve these goals while providing our customers with the high- est-quality packaging solutions. We expect the biggest

cost savings to be achieved through the reduced waste and downtime on the machine; we should see increased capacity allowing us to deliver more and faster than be- fore.” W.E. Roberts expects significant improvements in its optimization efforts by reducing waste and energy con-

sumption. Customers typ- ically see a 0.5 percent reduction in corrugator waste and an average run speed increase of up to 25 percent. “The team at Escada has demonstrated a clear understanding of our busi- ness needs and engaged with us to identify the right solution to meet our needs," Wilks said. "In addition to Profile and Syncro, Escada will de- ploy a bespoke version of Optima, Escada’s roll stock management system, that

will integrate with our in-house roll stock software and operate on the roll stands and clamp truck, meaning that we have enhanced visibility of paper consumption, further aiding our lean manufacturing practice."

don't take the time to measure it. Without measuring your progress, it's difficult to know if your strategies and tactics are working or if adjustments need to be made. #7: Not being adaptable. – Mistake: Many business own- ers believe that once they've found a strategy that works, they should stick with it. But this is a mistake. The business environment is constantly changing, and what worked yesterday may not work today. It's essential to be adapt- able and constantly reassess your strategies and tactics to ensure they are still effective. This means being open to new ideas and trying new approaches, even if they may seem risky. In conclusion, achieving business growth can be chal- lenging, but avoiding these common myths and mistakes can increase your chances of success. Remember to focus on retaining and nurturing existing customers, strike a bal- ance between cutting costs and investing in growth, and take calculated risks. Have a clear vision, measure your progress, and be adaptable to the changing business en- vironment. Following these guidelines can ensure a steady flow of oxygen and breathe new life into your growth.

New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes recently announced that Franklin Mountain Packaging, a manufacturer specializing in producing high quality corrugated micro-flute sheets and digital print and die cutting, has signed a lease on a new 150,000-square-foot production center and ware- house facility being built in New Mexico’s Borderplex According to a report in the Alamogordo Conserva- tive Daily , the new facility is adjacent to Franklin Mountain Packaging's (FMP) current 140,000-square-foot building in Santa Teresa, N.M. The company expects to add 60 em- ployees in the next three years, bringing its total employee count at its New Mexico facilities to 155. FMP To Grow (CONT’D FROM PAGE 26)

Northern Mexico, along I-10, I-25, and I-40, where it can easily service its customers. “Our prime location affords us easy access to rail and ground transportation across the U.S. and Mexico,” according to the company's website. “The State of New Mexico’s focus on the border region for the past few years and their infrastructure investments are making the area an attractive spot for industrial de- velopment,” said Paul Foster, CEO of Franklin Mountain Investments. “The joint efforts on the Santa Teresa border crossing between the State of New Mexico and the State of Chihuahua are also moving the needle. Together, these investments and efforts will continue to foster economic growth in the area.” The company is assisted in its expansion by the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance (MVEDA). MVEDA has awarded Franklin Mountain $150,000 in economic as- sistance from the NMBorderplex Closing Incentive, a lo- cal incentive administered by MVEDA and the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico. “We are excited to see Franklin Mountain Packaging’s continued growth in Santa Teresa,” MVEDA President and CEO Davin Lopez said. “Investments like these are why Santa Teresa is fast becoming recognized as the premier location in the southwest United States for company ex- pansions.” The Santa Teresa Port of Entry is a primary crossing be- tween the United States and Mexico, and it is the first land port without a bridge structure from the east.

FMP’s expansion announcement is the third this sum- mer for businesses in the Santa Teresa Borderplex region. “Franklin Mountain Packaging is one of several companies that have recently announced plans to grow jobs and in- vest capital into New Mexico’s Borderplex region,” Secre- tary Keyes said. “These businesses are taking advantage of the logistical and cost advantages of doing business on New Mexico’s international border as they invest in more robust and transportation networks and supply chains.” FMP’s Quantum Corrugator is one of only two of its kind in North America and one of fourteen in the world. Quantum not only has advanced corrugated sheet-mak- ing capabilities but uses 30 percent less energy and square footage than traditional corrugators. Producing mi- cro-flutes means creating lighter weight sheets and boxes with the same strength, while using less fiber in each cor- rugated sheet or box. This translates into lower packaging and freight costs for FMP’s customers. FMP also has a high speed, single pass digital print- er on site that allows for printing high-quality graphics on corrugated sheets without the need for costly print plates. While having some die-cutting capabilities at its current lo- cation, the expansion will allow FMP to expand its die-cut- ting and finishing capabilities. The Santa Teresa location provides FMP with easy ac- cess to El Paso, Phoenix, the greater Southwest U.S., and
