WARLEY WASPS On Saturday the 30 th April 2022 I took part in a community swimming gala at the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre built for the Commonwealth Games. As part of the test event, I swam for Warley Wasps in the first official race, which was the 50m freestyle coming second in my heat. I was really excited to see the new Centre, which has a 50m Olympic size pool as well a 25m diving pool. The pools took two weeks to fill, using 1.2million gallons of water! After the Commonwealth games, Warley Wasps will merge with two other clubs to make Sandwell Aquatics and this is where we will train. If this sounds like your cup of tea, Warley Wasps are always looking for new swimmers. Thanks to Ivan for the story. HELP! On Friday evening, Beth Stokes (2S) and Sophie- Rose Stokes (5H) and their family welcomed four Ukrainians to come to live with them under the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme: Olya (mum), Nastya (her friend), Evangelina (age 6) and Daniel (age 3). Sophie has moved into Beth’s bedroom to give the Ukrainian children her old room. Daniel and Evangelina don’t speak English yet, but they have already learnt a few words (‘milk’, ‘toilet’, ‘yes’, ‘no’…) and enjoyed playing with Sophie, Beth and their older brother Lex. Olya and Nastya cooked some yummy borscht (Ukrainian beetroot soup), deruny (Ukrainian potato cakes) and pancakes filled with meat for the Stokes family. Friends from the Stokes’ church are bringing some English meals to feed the 9 mouths for the next fortnight while they all settle in together. Thanks to Mrs. Stokes for the story (and Beth for telling me all about it).
