Kids shine in school talent show spotlight COMMUNAUTÉ • COMMUN I TY GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

They sang. They danced. They told jokes. They spellbound spectators with magic tricks. Student stars at Rockland Public School pulled out all the stops when they stepped into the spotlight for their Annual Talent Show spectacular. Sponsor-coordinators Sarah Donaldson and Tracy Kolman were more than happy with the calibre of talented students turning out for auditions and rehearsals. More than three dozen acts went onto the schedule and everything went off without a hitch to the delight of both thematinee audience of students during a special assembly for the event and a later evening show for parents and other interested attendees. «It’s the first time we’ve had an evening performance,» said Donaldson. This year’s lineup featured a variety of musical acts, from soloists in either voice or instrument to a full-fledged rock band. Dan- cers strutted their stuff in the spotlight, and there were even stand-up comedy routines and magic acts in the entertainment mix. «We’ve got some very talented kids,» said Donaldson, «and ones who are also willing to try and step outside of the (talent show) box.» «They’re very committed too,» said Kol- man, adding that every performer made an effort to attend each of the twice-a-week rehearsal sessions scheduled over the past eight weeks leading up to the talent show. «It was a chance for them all to shine,» said Donaldson, «and, also this year, we had more talent than ever, along withmany of our staffmembers willing to volunteer their extra time to help us with setting up and stuff.» More than 200 members of the Ontario Catho- lic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) gathe- red for the Annual General Meeting in Toronto, to elect regional representatives to the board and to acknowledge and honour the service and commit- ment of Catholic trustees. At the gathering, Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario Vice-Chair Todd Lalonde was acclaimed as OCSTA Regional Director for Region 10, which includes the CDSBEO, the Algonquin and Lakeshore CDSB and Renfrew County CDSB. Lalonde has served for nine years as trustee with the CDSBEO.“I am very honoured and excited to take on this new role,” he explained. “In the last nine years I have learned extensively about the distinctive needs, as well as the accomplish- ments of our Catholic learners. In this new role, I hope to expand my knowledge further and help to enrich the experience of Catholic education for all students across Ontario.”– Francis Racine Lalonde acclaimed as OCSTA Region 10 director
