In the Devil’ s Barber Shop (Continued from Page 10) death. By a great effort I stood on my feet, and began to trudge on through the snow. I knew now that my feet were partly frozen, my hands too, and per haps some of my face. Only an inner determination kept me going but the realization of my condition urged me on until at last I reached home, and care, and safety. Oh, with what subtilty the enemy of our souls offers us the com fortable “feeling of belonging” when once we begin to compromise among non-Christians. But the end thereof is the death of vital Christian testimony, and pathetic defeat in our own lives. The chairs are always ready for cus tomers in the Devil’s Barber Shop. Thank God, the last chapter is not one of defeat, but of triumph. The scene now is in the very temple of Dagon, in the headquarters of heathenism and idolatry, the Satanic counterfeit and imitation, the “ synagogue of Satan.” But “ Samson called unto the Lord and said, O Lord God, remember me I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God” (Judg. 16:28)! His strength was ever and only in the Lord, not in Samson, and in his closing hours on earth he returned to his high tower of strength. We need never sit in the chair in the Devil’s Barber Shop, thank God! How Do You Say It? H ARDLY a day goes by without the misuse of the term “ Reverend.” It should be remembered that while one becomes a “ Doctor” by securing a col lege or university degree, one is a “ Cap tain by virtue of official military rank, yet no school confers a degree of “ Rever end. It is not a title of office, rank or occupation. On the other hand, the word “Rever end” is an adjective of respect, exactly like the word honorable which is used before the names of Mayors, Governors, Congressmen, etc., and the terms reveT- end, and honorable are used alike. Of course, one would not think of ad dressing a Governor as “Honorable” or “Honorable Smith.” It is equally incor rect to address a minister as “ Reverend” or “ Reverend Jones” or to speak of a minister as “the reverend.” The consen sus of most authorities is that pastors should be addressed as, The Reverend Mr. Jones, The Reverend Dr. Jones, The Reverend John J. Jones, Rev. John J. Jones. Thus we see that Reverend, whether spelled out or abbreviated should always be followed by either Mr., Dr., or the first name; and in speaking to a minis ter he should not be addressed as Rever end but merely as Dr. Jones, or if he has no degree, Mr. Jones.
