The Bible Institute

Enlarging the Circle o f Institute Friends I N planning its contacts with friends outside the school, the Bible Institute of Los Angeles has arranged to use for this purpose the consecrated services of a number of field workers, several of whom have been introduced to readers of these columns in earlier issues. T o this group has been added Cutler B. Whitwell (’25) who has served the Bible Institute in various capacities for many years, most recently as director of the stu dent employment bureau and as sponsor, with Mrs. Whitwell (’26) of the Ambassa dors Gospel Team. Mr. Whitwell will un dertake to create an increased interest in Biola’s affairs among her more than 2,500 alumni. He plans to do this by personal correspondence, by holding rallies at cen tral points on the coast, and by Bible con ferences and evangelistic meetings—work ing in cooperation with the officers of the Alumni Association. In Bible conferences and evangelistic meetings, he will be aided by an excellent gospel singer. In connection with these meetings, Mrs. Whitwell gives a teacher-training course for parents and teachers. Alumni groups desiring to hold a meeting or rally of this kind are asked to send their requests direct to Mr. Whit well at the Bible Institute, 558 S. Hope St., Los Angeles, Calif. Although Mr. Whitwell’s special field of activity at the present time is among former students of the Institute, he is also available for meet ings under the auspices of the Institute’s Extension Department. Included among the new workers in the Extension and Financial Department of the Institute is Eugene Poole, who came to California not long ago from Texas, where he had been engaged in the newspaper business for the past sixteen years. Ten of those years he was associated with his father, who operated a daily newspaper in Cleburne, Tex., for over a quarter of a century. In 1929 the newspaper was sold to a large corporation and Mr. Poole be came business manager, in which capacity he served until the corporation sold the paper last year. Mr. Poole has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church, South, of Cle burne, Tex., most of his life. He has been active in church and Sunday-school work, and he regards his position with the Bible Institute of Los Angeles as a direct answer to his prayer for a place in which his busi ness training could be put to full-time serv ice for the Lord. At Home and in Foreign Lands N EW workers of the Sudan Interior Mission scheduled to sail on Octo ber 6, on the “ Queen Mary” for Southampton, Eng., included Ray (Th.B. ’36) and Mrs. de la Haye (Sophie Witter, ’36) and Sarah J. Buller, ’34. After spend ing a few days in England, they expected to sail by another line to Lagos, Nigerian port of entry in West Africa. Their field

address will be Sudan Interior Mission, Minna, Nigeria, W . Africa. Miss Buller was graduated from Wheaton College in June. Eleanor Schumann, ’34, and Pauline Smith, ’29, who went to Valdez, Alaska, in the spring, were called in May to work in a newly organized Sunday-school in Kenai, a small native fishing village southwest of Anchorage. They hold also children’s Bible classes during the week. Jacob P. ( ’26) and Mrs. Kliever (Freda Neufeld, ’30) and their baby daughter, Anne Celeste, planned to leave in October for France. After studying the French language for about eight months, they are to go to French Equatorial Africa where they will serve under the Brethren Foreign Mission Board. Robert and Mrs. Chrisman (Esther Ender, ’27) and their baby daughter, Carolyn, sailed from San Pedro, Calif., on Septem ber 29 for Siam, where they expect to be stationed again at Ubon. They’ are mem bers of the Christian and Missionary Alli ance. Mabel Crawford, ’27, planned to sail October 19 from Hoboken, N. J., for French Equatorial Africa, after furlough. Miss Crawford serves under the Brethren For eign Mission Board and can be addressed at Bellevue par Bossangoa, par Bangui, French Equatorial Africa. Julius (’24) and Mrs. Raplee (Ruth Russell), members of the Orinoco River Mission, are at home on furlough and are living at 1326 Bates Ave., Los Angeles, Calif. Carl Jordan, ’36, was invited in Septem ber to assist in a three-weeks’ series of evangelistic meetings in the Baptist Church of Bisbee, Ariz., by conducting the song service, doing solo work in the campaign, and singing over the radio. Paula Wiebe, ’36, who was school nurse when she attended Biola, has been assisting in the children’s department of Ruth Home, El Monte, Calif. T h e K ing ’ s B usiness regrets that her name was incorrectly spelled in this department last month. Paul Tibbetts, whose violin music was greatly used of the Lord in many services in Los Angeles and nearby communities during his student days at Biola, is en rolled in the New England Conservatory of Music and is living at 90 Gainsboro St., Boston, Mass. For an outlet in Chris tian service, he has joined the Radio En semble of the New England Fellowship. With a soul-winning aim central in its program, the Fellowship finds that its high standard of music has given it free access to about thirty radio stations and to all the churches it can schedule. Besides play ing on the daily radio programs, the en semble assists with programs nearly every night and three times on Sundays. Carl and Mrs. Mansfield (May Arbuth- not, ’31) have moved to Magalia, Calif., where Mr. Mansfield is pastor of a small but growing church. They are placing .special emphasis upon visitation and chil dren’s work.

Insurance Stocks In the June 21st issue of B est ’ s I n su ran ce N ew s (Fire and Marine edi tion) an editorial article appears under the title "A .History of Fire Insurance Stocks." This article is surprising in its impli cations. It tells of the market results of a carefully picked group of popular Industrial stocks and bonds traded ac tively on the New York Stock Exchange for four different periods during the last thirty-five years, in comparison with the results of a representative group of fire insurance stocks. We believe every investor should read carefully this article. Copies mailed upon request without obligation of any kind.
