Five years ago, taxes on a $100,000 home were $1,357. Of this sum, $564 went to the township, $529 to the counties and $264 to the schools. Garbage taxes remain unchanged at $191, which includes a $153 fee for waste collection. Sewage levies rise from $200 to $300 per unit in St-Eugène and from $500 to $550 in Chute-à-Blondeau while the rates have been frozen at $350 in Ste-Anne. The roads department has been allocated $2,270,300, including $911,200 for road maintenance, $798,100 for improvements to La Grande Montée and $550,000 to re- place a bridge on Greenlane Road. ST-EUGENE | Although property values are rising, most taxpayers in East Hawkes- bury Township ought to enjoy a small tax reduction this year. The average ratepayer will pay about a dollar less in property taxes following the adoption of the municipality’s 2013 budget. The township, which expects to collect $1,453,628 in taxes this year, has decreased its tax rate by .08 per cent, however, the United counties of Prescott-Russell rate has dropped by 5.26 per cent and the school boards’ rate has dipped by four per cent. The owner of a home assessed at $132,717 will pay $1,530 in taxes this year. This sum includes $632 for the township, $616 for the county and $281 for the school boards.

Champlain Township residents who fall behind in their water bill payments are getting a break from the municipality – the fee to have their service disconnected has been dropped from $100 to $85. “It seems like we are kicking them while they are down,”Mayor Gary Bar- ton commented, explaining why the cut-off fee had been decreased. The fee charged to those who are in arrears was set years ago, related chief administrative officer JeanThériault at a recent council meeting. The total cost of employee time would be $77.29, said Théri- ault. When the 10% administration fee is added, the cost is $85.02.
