The meeting began with Defining the Race , in which a panel, led by Nagle, mimicked a pre-production meet- ing, dissecting variables and obstacles encountered, discussed the design requirements, and identified the consumables and materials used. The panel also fea- tured Joe Tuccitto, Sean Teufler, Dan Uress, Catherine Haynes,AJ Grome,Ann Michaud, Bobby Congdon, and Mark Samworth Bobby Congdon, Assistant Director at Sonoco Insti- tute and Christopher Teachout, Technical Sales Sup- port for Max Daetwyler Corp., led the discussion on Empowering the Pit Crew .Virtual reality (VR) is gear- ing up to take a new role in press operator training. The presenters discussed how VR can provide cost-ef- fective, zero-waste and scalable training. The session showed a new flexographer how to set up and run a virtual flexo press. Tools of the Trade Optimizing the Tools for the Race examined the importance of performing a print optimization to de- termine the prepress requirements, ink densities and press settings prior to fingerprinting. The consumables that were selected for the project were discusses, in- cluding the attributes that led to their selection and how they performed on press. Catherine Haynes, All Printing Resources, present- ed in the Rounding the Curves session, focusing on fingerprinting. She explained the two fingerprints and their differences, then showed a live demonstration of a fingerprint run on a VR press. The session focused on how the fingerprint data is used in prepress and where the curves are applied in the RIP.A.J. Grome,VP Sales & Marketing for E.C. Shaw Company, further dis- cussed optimizing operating parameters. Taking a Process Control Lap session opened with Mark Samworth discussing press characterization in a CRPC-6 workflow. Samworth discussed how utilizing a printer’s control target to print back to the values obtained during the fingerprint can enhance the quality of the characteri- zation run. The ways in which ICC profiles are used in prepress across all devices were explored.Attendees could see a VR press perform the characterization run while printing back to values on the adjusted printer’s con- trol target. FTA President Mark Cisternino and FTA Director of Education Joe Tuccitto led the Finding and Training Tomorrow’s Workforce session. They provided a sum- mary of FTA’s year-long and industry-wide workforce

Packaging Firms Partner To Address Skills Shortage Two packaging manufacturers have joined forces in a bid to address the skills shortage within the industry. Stockport, UK-based Arden Dies and Glossop Cartons have teamed up to try and attract more young people into the sector. The two family-owned firms, who operate in the carton manufacturing supply chain, will tour schools, colleges and job clubs across the region to promote the benefits of manufacturing and engineering careers within the sustainable packaging sector. The partnership comes after the British Chamber of Commerce revealed the manufacturing industry is fac- ing its greatest skills shortage in 30 years. “There’s a real lack of awareness among young peo- ple coming through the education system today about the opportunities available within the packaging and printing sectors,” said Martin Poynter, Managing Direc- tor at Arden Dies.

study’s findings, and the actionable items derived from it. Then, educators from a pair of FTA member tech- nical educational institutions, including Shawn Oetjen from Flexographic Tech in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Zachery Blackburn from Central Piedmont Com- munity College, Charlotte, North Carolina, discussed how their programs attempt to address those findings. In Tuning-up the Process , Colorware Founder Dan Uress, and Ann Michaud from 3M, looked at several process improvement methodologies specific to flex- ography and put one to the test by taking a deep dive into that data and determining what could have been done differently to add value to the process. Mark Samworth returned for The Winners’ Cir- cle , in which the VR press was put into production mode and produced the final piece live. With samples in hand, FTA examined the challenging print compo- nents—once considered too difficult for flexography— while discussing modern techniques used today. Papermaker Fedrigoni Acquires Ritrama Fedrigoni S.p.A., an Italian manufacturer of specialty papers and high value-added products for packaging and fine printing and self-adhesive labels, has signed an agreement to acquire the Ritrama group, an Italian multinational group specializing in self-adhesive prod- ucts. Ritrama has manufacturing facilities in Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Chile and China. The Rink family, founders of Ritrama, will maintain ownership of and continue to manage Ritrama’s North American opera- tions, while continuing its business partnership with the rest of the Group. This acquisition — the second since Fedrigoni’s ac- quisition by Bain Capital — is said to strengthen Fed- rigoni’s position in the European PS label market, in which it operates through the Arconvert and Manter brands. The acquisition combines Fedrigoni’s produc- tion of wine labels and in the production of labels for the food, household and logistics markets, with the self-adhesive technologies of Ritrama, a producer glob- ally of labels for the pharmaceutical, beverage and per- sonal care markets. Ritrama’s total revenues of approximately Euro 400 million in the year ended December 31, 2018, coupled with Fedrigoni’s total revenues of approximately Euro 1.2 billion in the same period, amount to total reve- nues of the combined group of approximately Euro 1.6 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the first quar- ter of 2020, and is subject to certain closing conditions.

E-Commerce Drives Growing Smart Labels Market The global smart labels market is projected to record a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 13 percent from 2019 to 2029, according to a new report from Future Market Insights. Gains remain driven by growing need for inventory and logistics management solutions, es- pecially in the healthcare industry. Adoption of smart labels has also witnessed a sharp increase in the food industry,as demand for product authentication and abil- ity to enhance food safety and reduce food waste con- tinues to surge. Being Smart Use of connected packaging solutions such as smart labels enables end users to gain access to all traceable information across the supply chain. Moreover, smart labels allow them to follow a wide range of products from conception to shelf, which in turn, is projected to boost the demand substantially. Significant growth of the e-commerce sector coupled with increasing use of communicative & connected packaging is bolstering the demand for smart labels across the globe. Retail industry has been identified as the key end user of smart labels, as the sector generates constant demand to ensure product authenticity.

The study reports that demand for RFID and EAS la- bels is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14 percent and 13 percent, respectively, during the predefined time- frame. This growth can be attributed to their rising application in inventory management, asset tracking, goods distribution, and record tracking. Modern consumers demand more engaging features on the packaging, which give accurate information on product quality and other relevant information. This in turn is expected to boost the sales of smart labels in the foreseeable future. Smart labels based on RFID technology continue to witness higher demand as compared to EAS and elec- tronic shelf labels. RFID labels are highly preferred as they not only aid in ensuring consumer safety but also enhance brand integrity. “Smart labels and tags act as the first communicators of a brand, and can influence the retail experience in a multitude of ways,” said a Future Market Insights an- alyst. “As consumers’ demand for connected packag- ing grows, companies are leveraging smart labels to ensure protection of products from tampering, adul- teration, and counterfeiting, in addition to simplifying the process in supply chain. Authenticity, traceability, and security attributes provided by smart labels are ex- pected to bolster the sales in the near future.”
