INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

English/Communication Secondary Credential (36 units) The E nglish Department in cooperation with the Communi­ cation Department provides a program leading co a Single Sub­ ject California Teaching Creden­ tial in English/Communication. This program provides consider­ able flexibilit y fur those planning co teach English in high school. Srndents who compl e te chis pro­ gram are ab le to waive the subject matter examinations (see Depart­ ment of Education), which other­ wise would he required for a Ca li ­ fornia Teaching Credential. In addition tu the general education requirement of 12 units in English 110 A/B. English 240 American Literature and Communi cat ion 100, an English core of 27 units (E nglish 2.'il, 252, 320, 340, 351 or 3S3 or .,.'i4, 400, and nine units to he selected from English 341, 344, 360, .,70, 380, 420, 4.,o, 440, 451, 452. and 460) is required. An additional 9 units are to he selected from the Communication department. for a total of 36 units in th e major. The student mu se consult with the Departments of English , Communication and Education for specific courses allowed in the three areas listed above. Humanities Major/ English Concentration The Department of English offers an English concentration for the Humanities major (see Humanities section for specifics). OBJECTIVES

The Department of English has fi ve objectives: the under­ standing of language as a means of communication, the ability to speak and write with clarity: an understanding of literature as a record of the development of human thoug ht and the reflec­ tion of human history; the appre­ c iation and enjoyment of litera­ rnre: and an acquaintance with the literary heritage of the Eng­ lish -s peaking world. History 305 is recommended for all English majors.

A /Jache/or of Arts degru it1 Et1glish is offered upon comple­ tion of the university baccalaure­ ate and English major in one of the emphases whic h co nsists of 3.1 units , 24 of which must be upper division. A minimum grade of "C' ' is required in order to receive credit for any course counted toward the major. MAJORS Eng lish Emphasis (33 units) The srndent is required to cake English 240, American Literature, m fulfill the general education liter­ arn re requirement. The major req uires: English 251 , 252 are pre­ requisite for th e major and to upper division courses in the major. The scudent must complete: English 360, 370. 400, 4.'i I and 452. The remaining 18units ma y be com­ pleted in any of the upper division English course offerini,,'S. The following emphases/spe­ ci al programs are also offered: Writing Emphasis (33 units) The English Department offers a Writing Emphasis. This program enables srndents co sup­ plement their study of literature with theoretical and vocational training in writing.
