United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) Housing Services extended their stay for an additional day, however, on Monday the tenants were informed that they were required to be out of the hotel by 11 a.m. Tuesday. Julie Tomkinson, whose sister Jude Belisle lived in the building, said given her sister’s health issues, the options for where she can stay are limited and UCPR Housing Services was only able to offer a list of potential shelters. “She can’t go to a shelter,” said Tomkin- son who has been contacting UCPR Housing Services, Legal Aid, the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board, and short-term rental buildings looking for support for her sister. “Legal Aid is telling me to speak with Social Housing, and Social Housing is telling me to speak with Legal Aid. It’s very frustrating and making all these phone calls.” “The tenants there don’t have money for insurance, they don’t have savings,” Tomkin- son said. “I can’t believe we are going to going to leave these people on the street in the middle of winter with just a days’ notice.” Tominson noted one tenant is searching for shelter with their 18-month-old child. Several tenants, including Tomkinson, set up crowdfunding campaigns on GoFundMe to recoup some of their losses and help them find more permanent shelter. Community members organized a collec- tion drive for clothes, furniture and toiletries to set up a “store” for those impacted at Pleasant Corners Public School in Vankleek Hill. Laura Kirby, an organizer of the collection drive said they have have already received many donations from those looking to help. “It’s been so contributive. It really shows the empathy of our community,” she said, noting that they are still looking for big items like stoves and fridges for those who lost everything in the fire. Small items can be dropped off at the school during school hours, but Kirby said

Il veut aussi se concentrer sur la gestion

Le maire de la municipalité de Russell Pierre Leroux a été élu par acclamation président des Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell (CUPR), lors de la réunion inaugurale annuelle du 20 décembre 2023. « Je suis content d’avoir la confiance de mes collègues » a-t-il affirmé lors d’une entrevue avec les Éditions André Paquette. M. Leroux avait été président des Comtés unis en 2020, en début de pandémie de Covid-19. Il a expliqué que cette année avait été difficile pour les municipalités et les Com- tés unis à cause de la pandémie. Il espère avoir plus de facilité dans la réalisation des projets lors de ce second mandat. M. Leroux a fait part de ses priorités lors de son discours d’assermentation. Le nouveau président vise l’achèvement de la construction de la nouvelle Résidence Prescott-Russell dont l’ouverture est prévue cette année. Elle offrira 224 lits, soit 78 de plus que la résidence actuelle. M. A woman and her 5-year-old twin grand- daughters were in the vehicle at the time. Sergeant Potvin tied himself off with a rope to the cruiser’s push bars, then navigated the waist-deep water to rescue the children and grandmother, successfully bring them to safety. Sergeant Potvin returned to the water to assist the tow operator in removing the vehicle from the flooded road.

Les intempéries et les catastrophes naturelles ont causé plus de 3 milliards $ de dommages assurés pour la deu- xième année consécutive en 2023 au Canada. Le bilan annuel du Bureau d’assurance du Canada (BAC) place 2023 au quatrième rang de sa liste des années climatiques les plus coûteuses — une liste qui est toujours dominée par l’année 2016, avec l’incendie de forêt dévastateur de Fort McMurray, en Alberta. Le bilan du BAC pour 2023 est dominé par les incendies de forêt dans les régions d’Okanagan et de Shuswap, en Colombie- Britannique, qui ont causé à eux seuls 720 millions $ en dommages assurés, soit 23 % du bilan total de 3,13 milliards $ au pays. Là-dessus, plus de 480 millions $ de dommages assurés ont été causés par trois incendies autour du lac Okanagan, qui ont brûlé pendant des semaines et détruit 70 NBJTPOTÆ8FTU,FMPXOBFUBVUSFTEBOT MB1SFNJÍSF/BUJPOEF8FTUCBOL Les incendies de forêt ont fait rage dans tout le pays pendant plus de quatre mois en 2023, brûlant plus de 18,5 millions d’hec- tares de forêt, dont 4,5 millions d›hectares au Québec, un record de tous les temps. Le coût total des incendies de l’été dernier est toutefois bien plus élevé que ces «dommages assurés». Les estimations en Colombie-Britannique, en Alberta, en Saskatchewan et dans les Territoires du /PSE0VFTUÊWBMVFOUMFDPÚUEFMBMVUUFDPOUSF les incendies à 1,4 milliard $, sans compter le coût des évacuations et des interruptions de l›activité économique. Le BAC a par ailleurs estimé à 340 millions $ les dommages assurés causés par une série de tempêtes estivales en Ontario, en juillet et en août. The Hawkesbury Hawks lost two back- to-back games to the Carleton Place Canadians to start of the second half of their season in 2024. The Hawks faced the Canadians on Fri- day, January 5, at the Robert Hartley sports complex. The Canadians took the lead early in the first period with a goal from Cole Mathews, but Deklyn Campbell tied the game for the Hawks just two minutes later. With five minutes to play in the first, Carleton Place’s Masen Cutley scored his team’s second goal to put his team ahead. Owen Hardy scored to put the Hawks back on even footing in the second period, but Bill Gourgon scored the Canadians third goal before the end of the period. No goals were scored in the third period, giving Carleton Place the two points with a 3-2 win. Hawks Meet Canadians for a Rematch Hawkesbury visited Carleton Place on Sunday afternoon hoping to take back points after their defeat on Friday night. Unfortu- nately for the Hawks, Carleton Place scored the five goals in the first and second period, with goals from Mathieu Fehr, Noah Kinloch Varga, Caton Ryan and two from Gourgon. Campbell and Aiden Stubbings scored two goals for the Hawks early in the third period showing a glimmer of hope for a comeback, but the Canadians put an end to the Hawks’ hopes with a goal from Jace Benvie. Alex Fournier scored a final consolation goal for the Hawks with three minutes left in the third, but it was too little, too late. Carleton Place took the game 6-3.

ASD United will be hosting the fourth annual Snowmobile Ride for Autism on February 17. The fundraiser is open to everyone with a snowmobile. It will be set up as a Valentine’s Day themed scavenger hunt. Participants will have the opportunity to collect points through the scavenger hunt and win prizes provided by ASD United’s sponsors. Those who wish to participate can visit http://ridesforautism.ca/ or contact ASD United via social media. ASD United was founded by a family with child on the autism spectrum. Since receiving the diagnosis, Paul and Nicole Taylor have continued learning, teaching and promoting autism awareness while supporting other families in the community.
ASD United hosted the ‘Skate with your Heroes’ event in collaboration with Eastern Ontario Province Police, offering the opportunity for the local autism community to meet with first responders, and give them a chance to familiarize themselves with those with special needs. The event took place on December 23 at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex in Hawkesbury. A dozen Ontario Province Police (OPP) officers, local fire crews and firest response services were joined by Hawkesbury mayor Robert Lefebvre, ASD United Sponsors and nearly 40 ASD United members including family members and children with autism were present at the event. MONSIEUR RICHARD BRUNET Le vendredi 15 décembre 2023, à l’Hôpital général de Hawkesbury et du district, Richard Brunet, de Vankleek Hill, est décédé à l’âge de 73 ans à la suite d’une courageuse bataille contre le cancer. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse bien-aimée, Marie-Claire, avec qui il a partagé 52 merveilleuses années de mariage. Il est le père chéri de Chantal Sauve (Mike) et de Michel (Chantal Chartrand). Il était le «G.P.» amusant de Kyle, Dominic et Kari-Anne, qu’il appelait affectueusement «Sunshine». Il était le frère de Raymond (Marielle) et d’Yvon (Carole). Il manquera à ses nièces et neveux, ainsi qu’à sa belle-famille de la famille Duval. Prédécédé par ses parents, Roméo et Ida Brunet. La famille désire exprimer sa gratitude au personnel de l’Hôpital général de Hawkesbury et du district, au Dr Landa, au Dr Bender, aux infirmières et aux ambulanciers paramédicaux de Prescott Russell pour les soins exceptionnels qu’ils ont prodigués. MR. GÉRARD GAUTHIER Gérard Gauthier from St. Bernardin, Ontario passed away peacefully on Monday January 1, 2024, at the age of 91. He was the beloved husband of Catherine MacLeod. Son of late Henri Gauthier and late Marie Rose Besner. Dear brother of Germain (Louise Charon) and Denise (late Gilles Whissell). Predeceased by his siblings André (late Juliette), Vincent (late Simone), Rémi (Thérèse Dupont), Agathe (the late Laurier Wathier), Émerence (late Joachim Lalonde), Gertrude (late Rolland Barron), Rachelle ( late Gaétan Souligné). Brother- in-law of Jean MacLeod ( late Donald Ian). Special uncle to Réjean (Marie Ann), Anne Marie (Clayton), Guy (Lorna), François (Louise). Loving uncle to many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces, great grand nephews, and friends. Gerry was community minded, volunteered on several projects and coached girls’ and boys’ hockey and broomball teams. The family wishes to thank Hillcrest Funeral Home for their care and concern. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Youssef (Cornwall), Dr. Ruzicka (Ottawa) and Drs. Simon & Richard McCall (Hawkesbury). A special thanks to the staff at The Palace Long Term Care for their tender loving care. A Private Family Inurnment will take place in the spring at Kenyon Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Dunvegan.
