FEBRUARY 2024

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA TPT celebrates Black History Month and honors the lasting contributions of Black trailblazers and community members. Our programming features the powerful stories that explore our shared history and a path to a more equitable future. This month, we have a slew of programs that I know you will enjoy – and maybe even share with your friends and family members. With the shift into a New Year, we turn our attention to several new documentary premieres under our Minnesota Experience series. Following the debut of Jesse Ventura Shocks the World! in January (which you can stream for free on the PBS App), we are excited to share the next film in the line-up: Hope in the Struggle , an inspiring look at the life and work of groundbreaking Freedom Fighter, civic leader, and community activist Dr. Josie Johnson, otherwise known as the “First Lady of Minnesota Civil Rights.” Over the course of 70 years, Dr. Johnson fought tirelessly for housing, voting, employment, and education rights in the North Star State, and her story comes to life through her own firsthand account, as well as through the anecdotes of those who know her best – her granddaughters. You will not want to miss this premiere on Monday, February 19 at 8 pm on TPT 2. Earlier in the month, the incomparable Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is back with another riveting series about Black culture in America. A four-hour documentary series, Gospel dives into the history of Black religious music and preaching, showcasing the symbiotic relationship of words and songs present in any Black church. The series also explores the evolution of preaching styles over time, and the impact of class, gender, cultural innovations, and consumer technologies that shaped the development of gospel since its conception. Gospel airs in two parts, February 12 & 13 at 8 pm on TPT 2.

Jesse Ventura Shocks the World!

Barbara Chase-Riboud: Novelist, Poet, Sculptor By Alexandra Grabbe

Barbara Chase-Riboud is one of those rare overachievers who are so low-key in the pursuit of their goals that few people recognize the full extent of their accomplishments. Six novels, three books of poetry and a 2022 memoir titled "I Always Knew" constitute an impressive body of work; Chase-Riboud, based in Paris, is also a sculptor. The Museum of Modern Art in New York showcased her work last fall with “The Encounter: Barbara-Chase Riboud/Alberto Giacometti.” Her writing and her sculpture are motivated by the same relentless urge — to make Black Americans aware of their history and to encourage them to take pride in their heritage. In 1979, Chase-Riboud wrote a historical novel that turned its author into a celebrity. "Sally Hemings" tells the story — based on conjecture — of Thomas Jefferson's mistress, a slave and the half-sister of his deceased wife. Explaining Sally Hemings became almost a mission. Chase-Riboud is quoted in the New York Times of June 2, 1981, as saying, "The fact that Jefferson is great is not in dispute, and the fact that Sally Hemings is Black is not in dispute. But the blending of great and Black seems to be what makes people climb the wall. It has to do with American historical attitudes, and it has to do with race. One of the ironies is that Sally Hemings was three-quarters white; she was Black because she was defined by her society as being Black." Chase-Riboud's memoir is composed of letters to her mother, Vivian Mae, and reveals the author's behind-the-scenes emotions before and after the publication of her bestseller.

In 1977, she describes what success feels like, calling herself an "accidental" historian: "Nobody said, 'Be careful because your primary goals and your personality as an artist will be eclipsed for a while and your life will be changed forever.'" In 1994, Chase-Riboud returned to art full time. Individual pieces, such as the "Malcolm X" series, reflect the artist's concern with Black American history but were not created as political statements per se. She asks the question of what qualifies as "Black art." She set out to prove there was no such thing and "the idea that there was, was as stupid as listing rhythm and blues and pop music separately, one for Blacks and one for Whites."

Are You Prepared for Death? By Amy Carlson Gustafson

It's been nearly five years since Pat Miles' husband, Charles "Bucky" Zimmerman, died at age 72 after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. He was healthy, she says, so his illness came as a shock. Another unwelcome surprise? What happened after his death. Instead of being able to grieve fully, Miles was consumed by attorney battles, tracking down account numbers and sorting through investments. She says it was a "nightmarish" scenario where the people she thought were on her side weren't interested in her well-being. The retired, award-winning Twin Cities TV anchor and radio host, who now lives in Arizona, was truly lost when it came to navigating her husband's death and consumed by what she calls “the grim fog of grief.” “Bucky and I had a will and a trust – I thought everything was taken care of," Miles, 73, says. "As it turned out, nothing was taken care of. If you wait until someone's sick and dying, you've waited too long because you're not going to get the information you need at that point. You're thinking about keeping this person alive for another day or getting them to drink a bottle of water. You're not thinking about the account numbers, the investments, the other things you don't know about." "If you wait until someone's sick and dying, you've waited too long because you're not going to get the information you need at that point."

Determined to help people avoid her mistakes, Miles wrote “Before All Is Said and Done: Practical Advice for Living and Dying Well” featuring the voices of fellow widows along with financial, legal and medical experts. "The people who have read the book tell me they are taking action," Miles says. "They're thanking me for writing and speaking about this. That's very gratifying." Miles listened to hundreds of people tell their stories during her journalism career. But the experiences people tell her about now hit differently than during her time as a broadcaster. "When I sign books after a speaking engagement, everybody has a story to tell me, and I'd say 90% of these are not good stories," says Miles. "As a culture, we don't want to deal with death. I tell people I used to be like you. I never would have come to listen to me talk about this book."
