The Biodiversity Consultancy Automotive & Manufacturing
Where business and nature thrive
Where is your company on its nature journey?
Nature is Fundamental to Business
Every business depends on nature, whether through direct operations or global supply chains. As biodiversity declines and ecosystems degrade, risks extend beyond raw material availability to include supply chain disruptions, increased input costs, regulatory pressures, and operational shutdowns. These challenges can jeopardise business continuity, resilience, and reputation, making nature-related risks a material concern for manufacturers. Yet opportunities exist: by integrating nature into strategic planning, forward-thinking companies can mitigate risk and unlock value through innovation, efficiency, stakeholder trust, and long-term sustainability.

Volvo had established climate-neutral and circularity ambitions for 2040 and sought to complement these with a biodiversity ambition aligned with Science-Based Targets for Nature (SBTN). TBC conducted an LCA-based biodiversity footprint assessment across Volvo’s value chain to identify key drivers of nature impacts. These insights informed the co-development of SBTN-aligned targets, an overarching biodiversity strategy, and a performance measurement to track progress. TBC also supported the development of public communication materials and early steps towards TNFD readiness through a multi-year, phased engagement. As a global technology group expanding from a regional to a global footprint, e& sought to build on its sustainability progress and develop a credible transition plan that went beyond carbon and could be applied across rapidly developing markets. Carbon Trust and TBC worked together to co-design e&’s Climate Transition Plan, supported by workshops, decarbonisation modelling, and financial analysis of decarbonisation levers (led by Carbon Trust). TBC facilitated an ambition-setting workshop to help define appropriate levels of ambition for circularity and nature and conducted a biodiversity and water risk screening across 61,000 operational sites in six major markets to identify priority risks. As a global chemicals manufacturer, the client sought to develop a nature positive approach by comprehensively assessing their nature impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities, establishing clear baselines and targets to inform a coherent nature strategy. TBC conducted a biodiversity materiality assessment and site-level biodiversity screenings for a selection of priority manufacturing sites. The findings were complemented by strategic advice on the client’s emerging nature strategy and CDP reporting, with recommended KPIs for integrating biodiversity in the client’s environmental management system. Since 2022, TBC has continued to provide targeted guidance to support wider integration of biodiversity across the business.
The assessment gave Volvo a robust, science-based understanding of biodiversity impacts across its value chain, enabling the company to commit to avoiding and reducing impacts on nature in line with science-based targets and to set a long-term ambition of delivering an overall positive impact on nature by 2040. The results now guide the development of IPBES pressure targets and vehicle-specific biodiversity targets, inform Volvo’s approach to TNFD disclosure, and support internal decision-making by strengthening the business case for biodiversity action and the design of a corporate approach to restoration. The engagement enabled the successful publication of e&’s Climate Transition Plan in 2024, including the launch of public commitments on water and No Net Loss of biodiversity. The biodiversity and water risk screening provided e& with a clear view of priority risks across its operational portfolio in key markets and a roadmap to inform next steps on climate, circularity, and nature as the group continues to scale globally.

The client has advanced their approach to assessing nature-related impacts, risks, and dependencies across their direct operations and supply chain, with guidance for on-site assessment and monitoring of biodiversity outcomes. TBC is continuing to support the client in further strengthening cross-functional integration of biodiversity across their business (e.g. risk, procurement, supplier engagement), while also preparing for alignment with regulatory and voluntary standards (e.g. TNFD, CSRD).

Siemens identified biodiversity as a critical but previously unassessed component of its corporate sustainability strategy. TBC conducted a biodiversity and water risk assessment across Siemens’ value chain, followed by a value chain biodiversity footprint assessment to deepen understanding of key drivers of nature loss. Completed in fiscal year 2023, the assessment covered Siemens’ own operations and upstream value chain, including impacts associated with raw material sourcing, and focused on pressures such as land use change, pollution, and climate change. These insights informed the development of a comprehensive, group-wide biodiversity strategy designed to align with Siemens’ existing water and carbon work. Ørsted sought to assess biodiversity impacts and dependencies across its renewable energy portfolio as a step towards alignment with Science-Based Targets for Nature (SBTN). TBC conducted a materiality assessment and location-based risk analysis across direct operations and priority supply chain commodities, using the SBTN Materiality Screening Tool. These insights were used to identify priority sites, commodities, and country–commodity combinations, and to support collaborative target-setting workshops with the Ørsted team. Early in their nature journey, this well-known technology sector client sought clarity on biodiversity impacts, dependencies, and alignment with emerging nature-related frameworks. TBC conducted a quantitative hotspot assessment across the full value chain, followed by natural capital assessments at selected sites and an analysis of financial exposure. Through workshops with teams across corporate functions, data centres, offices and supply chain, TBC co-developed a set of practical recommendations.
The client gained a clear understanding of the scale and distribution of biodiversity impacts across their operations and supply chain, enabling the identification of priority areas for early action and baseline development. With TBC’s action plan, the client has now initiated internal strategy development to drive their nature-positive ambition forward.

The assessment gave Ørsted a science-based view of biodiversity risks and impacts across its operations and value chain, positioning the company as an early adopter of SBTN for renewable energy, including offshore wind. The work identified clear priorities and practical pathways for future target setting despite current limitations in SBTN guidance. It also built internal capability through a repeatable approach, strengthening Ørsted’s readiness to
