No details of the injury were given in the police statement. That part of the case is now under the mandate of the SIU and a representative for the unit reported during a phone interview that the investigation is still in progress. When the report is done it will go to the Attorney-General’s office but will not be made public though the SIUmay issue a press release. ATV riders need to steer clear Eastern Ontario | A rash of fatal ATV-re- lated fatalities has prompted the Ontario Provincial Police to urge all-terrain vehicle operators to exercise caution while pursu- ing their favourite activity. This year, five fatalities involving ATVs have been reported in the province. Two main contributing factors were speed and loss of control, says the O.P.P. ATV enthusiasts are reminded that obser- vance of some basic rules can help them steer clear of harm’s way. Always wear an approved helmet. Never operate any vehicle when consum- ing alcohol. Read the instruction manual and follow manufacturer’s recommendations. Obey warning labels and stickers. Check with the local municipal office or police to ensure what roads are approved. Generally ATVs are prohibited on main- tained roads unless the province or mu- nicipality has passed a by-law approving the use of ATVs on specific roads. It is the responsibility of the operators to find out which roads are approved. Parents should remember that ATVs are not toys. Children should only use ATVs after hav- ing received proper instruction and under direct supervision. Children should operate an ATV that is rated for their age, never a vehicle designed for adult use. Make sure your off-road ve- hicle is registered, plated and insured.
