Wardens caucus will tackle policing costs

The cost for police services in Eastern On- tario and the proposed new billing plan of the OPP was the focus for the opening ses- sion of the United Counties of Prescott-Rus- sell (UCPR) Jan. 22 regular meeting. The morning’s correspondence includ- ed copies of letters and resolutions from Champlain Township and several other communities throughout Eastern and Southern Ontario regarding the cost of po-

lice services and demands for the province to do something to help out municipalities who have to contract with the OPP for their policing. “One thing we do not want to do is set one municipality against another,” said St- Pierre, the current warden for the UCRP and also president of the Eastern Ontario War- dens Caucus (EOWC) for 2014. During its recent January inaugural meet- ing for the year the EOWC identified polic- ing costs and the new OPP contract billing proposal as one of the three top priorities for the caucus this year. For many munici-

palities a recent 8.55 per cent pay increase that the province approved for OPP salaries means an unavoidable increase to local property tax rates. Stéphane Parisien, UCPR chief adminis- trative officer, who is now this year’s EOWC secretary-treasurer, noted that the wardens caucus wants to focus on finding a way for all stakeholders to work together on devel- oping a new police services contract model. “What we need is a new model,” he said. “Something that is not going to be divisive.” UCPR council to step back and let the EOWC handle the issue for now.

FINCH | The ice is cracked and broken along some stretches of the South Nation River but there are no worries now about any winter flooding risks. The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) has ended its “flood outlook” notice for winter ice conditions as of mid-January. The mild and wet conditions, including icy rain, of early January that followed the extreme cold and snow conditions that ended the past year created localized snow melt and water ponding situations in some areas along the shores of the South Nation River and its tributaries. But there were no reports of any major flooding incidents. The winter snow cover shrank by about 20 cen- timetres overall in the watershed. The sub-freezing temperatures that re- turned with the arrival of another polar vor- tex in Eastern Ontario has begun to freeze over again the stretches of open water .
