Annual Report of the Chair, Board of Governors And the General and Special Committees 2025
I am not running for the Board this year, nor for the Club Chair position. It was a great honor for me to lead the Club through the last six transformational years. I will continue to serve as Club Chair after the Annual Meeting until the Board elects my successor. Thus, unless there is some act of god, you will have a new Club Chair as of October 16, 2025, at approximately 1900. I cannot predict who the Board will elect to replace me, but I am sure that strong leadership will continue. We should all fully support whomever the Board elects. I am pleased to announce that I have selected five people to receive this year’s Green Jacket. Wait, what?! Yes, I know. Nevertheless, please indulge me because after serving as Club Chair for six years I could not in good conscience leave the field of battle without recognizing those who played a huge part in the successes of the past six years. These people are: Mr. Matt Bravo, CAPT Joe Mahan, USN, Ret., Mr. David Skiles, Mr. John Tuck, and LTC Eric Schnabel, USA, Ret. Mr. Matt Bravo has served as Club President or Club Vice President for the past five years. He was instrumental in planning for the COVID challenges (as documented in the ANCC Foundation’s history). He can also claim credit for improvements to the Club’s Attire Policy which the Membership has well reserved. CAPT Joe Mahan has served as Planning Chair for two years and previously served as House & Entertainment Chair for five years. He was the driving energy behind the Strategic Plan and Facilities Master Plan. More well known, he was the project officer of the Stars and Stripes Bar, which is hugely popular with the Members. Mr. David Skiles has served as Membership Chair for four years. Membership Chair is probably the most thankless job in the Club. In addition to these duties, as a paid consultant, he was able to assist in obtaining a tax deal with Arlington County. Later, after joining the Club as a member, and without pay, he was able to assist in obtaining a tax deal with Fairfax City and obtaining fans for the Fairfax Golf Course. Without his efforts, our monthly dues would be significantly higher, possibly as much as $130/month higher. Moreover, as you might learn from the ANCC Foundation’s COVID history, David (again unpaid by us) persuaded the Virginia Governor to keep golf open, even as the golf courses in DC and Maryland closed. Mr. John Tuck, the younger, has served as Finance Chair for three years. With others, John led the way to achieving one of my long-time goals of creating an interest-bearing investment account for the Club. Thanks to John’s leadership, we now have millions of dollars hard at work for us, safely earning interest. This new investment account is very important because our loan covenants require us to have a significant reserve that grows every year. Without our interest- bearing investments, we would have to raise dues significantly each year just to meet the growing requirements of the loan covenants. Additionally, as Finance Chair, John has aggressively raised the funded depreciation line in our budget which keeps the roof over our head. LTC Eric Schnabel served as Junior Activities Chair for two years and currently serves as the ANCC Foundation President. He also served as Co-Chair of the Fairfax Task Force and as Chair of the Military Initiation Fee Committee. Importantly, he served as the project officer for the design and construction of the Medal of Honor Library, which is much beloved by all who visit it. While I could have done without the plaque on the entryway, somehow even I cannot get it removed. Finally, I would like to thank Patrick King and the entire staff for the care and attention they have given to each of us over the past year, which truly makes this Club a special place.
