A good woman, in one of the western, parts of .Canada, was threatened with loss of sight: She came east, to consult a specialist. When he had examined her eyes, he.,asked: “What outlodk do you have at home ?” She told him that.she looked into the orchard, beyond that to the farm, then to' the prairie, and, far off, there were the Rockies. ;■ The oculist said: “Keep your eyes turned to the hills.’’ The Sufferer quickly caught the spiritual meaning of the words, and replied in the words of the Psalm: “I will lift up mine eyes to the hills; from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.”

John Selden was one of the most illustrious lawyers that belonged to the English bar. This great jurist; when his last case had been argued and he was done with the judgments of earthly courts, called to his bedside Archbishop Ussher, and said, “I have surveyed most1of the learning that is among the sons of men, yet at this moment 1 can recall nothing of it on which to rest my soul save one passage from the Holy Scriptures which rises to my mind. It is this1: ‘The grace'of God that brmgeth salvation hath appealed Unto all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts we should live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world, looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearance of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us.’” On this alone the clear, strong, experienced mind, trained to sift and weigh and .judge of truth and fact, rests and relies.

The biographer of Bishop Watts-Difchfield relates that when a child he was one day in the house of a very old woman, who asked him to read a framed text, “Thou God seest me.” Then she said, “When you are older, people will tell you that God is always watching you to. see when you do wrong, in order to punish you. I do not want you to think of it in that way, but I want you to take the text home, and to remember all your life that God loves you so much that He cannot take His eyes off you.” The-biographer adds: “Old Esther Walmsley’s gentle repu diation of the ordinary Christian’s slander of the God of love merits ,for her perpetual honor to her name.”; V

It is related that when Cyrus, conqueror of Asia, was review ing his troops, the wife of Tigranus was among the captives that had been taken. As others pressed to see the conqueror, Tigranus approached and offered a thousand talents to redeem his wife. Afterwards, as others were lauding the deportment of Cyrus, the wife of Tigranus was asked what she thought of him. She replied, “I did not see him.” “Upon what were your eyes placed?” asked Tigranus. She answered, “Upon him who said he would give a thousand talents to ransom my liberty, my husband.” Our eyes ought to be upon Christ who gave Himself as our personal. Saviour, and makes possible our ransom from sin.
