DRUPA Cancelled, Goes Online Following close consultation with exhibitors and partners, the 2021 edition of drupa will be cancelled due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The next event will take place as scheduled from May 28– June 7, 2024 in Düsseldorf, Germa- ny.To maintain the momentum until then, the organizers will offer “vir- tual.drupa”, a four-day digital event from April 20–23, 2021,during the time frame in which drupa was orig- inally scheduled.

I t has been a year in which all semblance of normalcy has been displaced. In light of all the turmoil, the need to celebrate the technical and artistic developments in the industry is more im- portant than ever before. Several high profile packaging competitions have recently wrapped, showcasing the high degrees of innovations in the printing and packaging markets.

Dealing With A Pandemic

“The pandemic has caused great uncertainty among exhibitors and visitors regarding participation in drupa 2021. Travel restrictions and budget pressure have increasingly intensified the situation in the print industry,” explained Erhard Wien- kamp, Managing Director of Messe Düsseldorf.“We have made this deci- sion together with our partners who support this step. The Royal Group Acquires Pinnacle Packaging The Royal Group (TRG) has acquired Pinnacle Packaging, Inc., located in Louisville, Kentucky. Jim McCubbin, current Pinnacle Packaging President and CEO, will continue in his position under the new ownership. Corrugated Provider Pinnacle Packaging, Inc., was established by Jim Mc- Cubbin and his partners in 2003. It is a supplier of cor- rugated containers and automotive packaging in the greater Louisville, Kentucky, market. The Royal Group is reportedly among the nation’s largest independent corrugated box and display manu- facturers, with more than 30 locations nationwide. ePac Opens First Production Plant In Africa ePac Flexible Packaging has expanded intoAfrica with its first production plant in Ghana. It is already taking orders, which will be fulfilled by ePac’s UK-based plant while building a plant in Africa is underway. ePac Ghana will be a collaborative venture with

ePac Holdings managed by Victor Sosah, a Ghanaian entrepreneur with extensive experience in flexible packaging. Tekni-Plex Invests In New Press For Medical Devices Tekni-Plex, a manufacturing company, invested $2 million in a narrow web, f lexographic press to meet printed lidding demands for larger-sized med- ical devices. Meeting Deadlines According to Tekni-Plex, the four-color press, featur- ing a web cleaner, inline vision system, 360-degree reg- istration adjustment and controlled ink densities, will die-cut coated lidding using proprietary heat seal coat- ing formulations. The 17-inch wide press is aimed at helping manufac- turers meet deadlines and deliver standard materials in two-to-four weeks.

Graham Partners Acquires Berry Global Flexible Biz Private investment firm Graham Partners has com- pleted the acquisition of Berry Global Group Inc.’s North American extrusion, converting, and coating business. Concurrent with the closing, the business will be combined with Graham Partners’ flexible pack- aging portfolio company,Advanced Barrier Extrusions LLC (ABX),which Graham Partners acquired inAugust 2018.The business will operate under the ABX name going forward. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina,ABX is reportedly the beneficiary of several consumer megatrends that are driving growth:A shift in preference toward clean labels, convenience, on-the-go lifestyles, increased spending on fresh foods, heightened focus on food safety, sustainability, and brand/SKU proliferation.ABX reportedly utilizes the latest technologies to produce co-extruded high-barrier films of as many as 11 layers; up to 12 color narrow and wide-web flexographic printed rollstock, bags, and pouches; and solvent and solvent-free laminations.ABX’s packaging solutions are used in a variety of food and healthcare packaging ap- plications. Yerecic Label Reduces Water With Flexo Wash Units In an effort to reduce its water usage,Yerecic Label purchased 5 FlexoWash self-contained anilox cleaning units along with a Flexo Wash plate cleaning system. The equipment has been installed for almost 8 years and has reduced the amount of water needed to clean print tooling. The company said it has reduced its water consump- tion by 61 percent since 2010 and is aiming for addi- tional 2 percent decreases in upcoming years. Omet Hosts Digital Open House Omet showcased its new Varyflex V4 during the live streaming open house “Packaging Revolution” on De- cember 3. This machine has been designed for the flexible packaging printing and converting industry. Printers were also shown the opportunities the press provides by bringing together various printing and drying tech- nologies such as offset sleeve, gravure, flexo, UV or electronic beam (EB).

Esko Launches Flagship Flexo Technology Center

APR Launches New Plateroom Video Series

All Printing Resources (APR), Glendale Heights, Il- linois, has expanded its popular educational video li- brary with a new 12-part series on plateroom process control. The video series is offered complimentary on APR’s YouTube Channel and each of the segments runs ap- proximately five minutes long. The first six episodes have been released and will be followed by six more.
