UNDOUBTEDLY! The religion of Jesus of Nazareth is a religion of socialism. Not the political socialism which is bent upon dragging all men down to a common level, but the Christian socialism whose aim is to lift all men up. The vision of perfect equality is but a madman’s dream; the thing is as impossible as it is undesirable. It finds no sanction in the teaching of our Lord; “The poor ye have always with you.” But the disposition which leaves what it calls (in an utterly unchristlike spirit), “the lower orders,” to sink deeper arid yet deeper in their poverty and degradation, without any attempt to raise them from the mire, has not learned the alphabet of Christianity. We are brethren— “children of the same dear God”—and the relationship binds us to play a brother’s part to our fellow man. We are professed followers of Christ, and the example of our Leader demands that we sshould spare no possible sacrifice that we may give “liberty to the captive and let the oppressed go free.” There is not a social evil, not an economic injustice, not a moral miasma, which afflicts mankind, with which we are not concerned and which it is not our bounden duty to Combat and, if it may be, to destroy. We are .our brother’s keeper indeed, and one day we shall assuredly have to give an account of the manner in which we have discharged the sacred trust. m M arch 5. “A man subject to like passions as we are.’.’—Jas: 5:17. WE are apt to think of the Saints of God as they are repre sented in painted windows, and to dream of them as having been supernatural beings with halos', round their heads. In truth, they were creatures of the same flesh and blood as we; with the same temptations, the same failings, the same sins. That they became saints', in spite of these things, was due to the action of Divine grace in their hearts and lives. The lesson we should learn is this: they were what we are ; what they became we also may become. “There is no respect of persons with God” ; let us submit ourselves to His Spirit as they submitted, and He will work in our lives the same triumphs as He worked in theirs. Job, Abraham, Moses, Elijah, David, Paul; their failures, as well as their successes, are written in the Book of God. We may not be as great in the world’s estimation as they, but we can be as good in the Master’s sight. We also are “called to be saints,” and He Who has so called us is able to perform the miracle. It is a mere excuse to say that they were “so very different to ourselves” ; they were not! They were men “subject to like passions as we are” : our weakness was theirs; their conquest may be ours. It cannot be so, however, if we do not believe it, if we do not ask it, for, above all things, they were men of faith and prayer. Wr Ife Have You Changed Partners? A BUFFALO man had a dishonest partner who almost wrecked the business of the firm by his questionable financial methods. The only way to win seemed to be to buy out the scamp’s interest, and get a more reliable part ner. But even after this was done the business did not pick up. One day an old business man came along, and the remaining member of the firm complained of the way that fate had used him. “Well, I can explain that,” said the visitor. “You haven’t let the world know that you changed partners. They still think that Smith is in the firm. The old sign
