DECEMBER 2019/JANUARY 2020

A Year of Growth Looking Back on 2019 and Forward to 2020 Our son, Noah, is now a senior in high school and looking at colleges in Florida. He was just wrapping up the application process as I was writing this, and I’d expect him to have made a decision by the end of winter. Right now, his plan is to study environmental engineering, but you know what they say about best-laid plans. Who knows what he will find an interest in when he gets to class? I’m just proud of him for continuing his education, and I’m happy to see him stay close(ish) to home. Noah isn’t the only member of our family with a big life change. His younger sister Mollie earned her driver’s permit this fall. She may still be a year out from her license and has plenty of training to go through, but that hasn’t stopped Mollie from talking about driving to school next year and the adventures she’s going to have. We all remember what that newfound freedom was like. Still, it’s going to be difficult for me to relax with Mollie behind the wheel! I’m someone who doesn’t like being a passenger to anyone’s driving — just ask my wife, Emily, how many times I press the imaginary brake when she’s behind the wheel! But I know Mollie is anxious to get started, and I’m excited for her. I can’t help but be proud of both my kids. Being a parent is such a strange experience because you raise a child to be a functioning, happy, healthy human, all with the intention of them leaving you someday. Their independence is always the goal, but you can’t help but feel a little sad to see them go. It’s rewarding to know my kids are happy and doing well. Emily and I are very proud of them. As we close the book on another year — and decade — I can’t help but think about how much has changed in the past year.

work. She could still keep an eye on the kids while managing the work the clinic needed, but Emily’s role has evolved now that we have independent high schoolers. Emily has taken on the marketing and community relations role at Four Corners Health & Rehabilitation this year. The transition has been very smooth, as she stepped in for Hillary while she was on maternity leave. I can tell Emily is passionate about the success of our clinic, and now, we sometimes forget that we don’t have to rehash the whole week during our dinner date! With Emily’s help and the dedication of our staff, Four Corners Health & Rehabilitation has grown this year, particularly our home services. We can reach more people than we ever have simply by offering our expertise in a patient’s home, in an assisted living facility, or wherever they may be. With the advent of subscription services like HelloFresh and Amazon Prime, it’s no wonder our patients have responded so well to this change. I cannot wait to see how this area of our clinic grows in 2020. But if 2019 was any indication, then we’re headed in the right direction. Thank you for all your support this year, and we can’t wait to see you again in 2020.

When the kids were still little, Emily devoted her workdays to Four Corners Health & Rehabilitation’s billing and behind-the-scenes

Happy New Year!

There’s No Expiration Date ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Joys of Starting a Business After You ‘Retire’

As a nation, America is getting older. By 2030, 20% of Americans will be 65 or older. With people living longer than ever before and the baby boomers approaching retirement age en masse, older adults will continue to have a massive impact on the American economy at large. Normally, we think of seniors as people who cash in on the hard work they’ve already accomplished. Many young people even worry Social Security will be wiped out by the time they reach retirement age. But who’s to say older adults can’t contribute to the economy? If you’ve ever tried to change jobs late in your career or pick up some part-time work after retirement, you know it’s hard to be hired as a senior. Quartz recently called seniors “the economy’s most underused

endings are stimulated.” In other words, pain is a type of signal; it’s our brain’s way of communicating that something is wrong. The world is full of dangers capable of causing us serious, irreparable harm, and when we feel pain, we know to leave those dangers alone. A small percentage of people suffer from a congenital insensitivity to pain. While that sounds like a superpower in theory, it’s a nightmare in practice. If you can’t feel pain, you have to be constantly mindful not to do something that could permanently injure or even kill you. 2 Types of Pain Pain can be categorized in many ways, but one of the most useful distinctions is between acute and chronic pain. Acute pain occurs from an injury and subsides once that injury heals. In cases of acute pain, our brain tells us that part of our body is natural resource.” Until more employers understand the value and potential of older workers, entrepreneurship remains the most viable avenue for seniors wanting to work after their primary career has ended. There are a number of reasons why seniors find creating their own business to be rewarding and why they tend to succeed when they do. Unlike younger people, who often become business owners in an attempt to make a fortune, older entrepreneurs can be content with small, sustainable micro-businesses. They also approach their businesses with a wealth of experience that can’t be purchased. As a result, 70% of ventures founded by older entrepreneurs are still open five

years later, more than double the rate of the general population.

With so much potential to be found in senior-run businesses, it’s no surprise that organizations are rushing to empower older adults with the tools they need to succeed. Senior Planet, a coworking space for seniors with outposts nationwide, teaches classes on skills like website creation in a space that makes older learners feel welcome and comfortable. On top of being an important economic driver, entrepreneurship can be a wonderful way for seniors to generate meaning and value in their lives. It’s never too late to start the business of your dreams.

A LOOK AT THE MOST COMMON HUMAN AILMENT What’s the Deal With Pain?

physiologically wounded and in need of repair. If we sprain an ankle, we know to avoid walking on it because it hurts to do so. Treating acute pain often involves protecting and encouraging healing in the injured area while strengthening the surrounding muscles for added support. Chronic pain, which lasts indefinitely and can lack a clear cause, is a murkier subject. Chronic pain is undoubtedly real, but diagnosing and treating it requires more guesswork. Sometimes it is the result of an underlying condition, such as arthritis. In others, it is the result of damage to the nerves, a condition known as neuropathy. No matter how much or what type of physical pain you suffer, physical therapy can likely help get you on the path to feeling less of it.

Saint Augustine once called physical pain the “greatest evil” known to man. If you think back as early as you can remember, you’ll probably recall painful episodes involving scraped knees and twisted ankles, among many others. While almost everyone can experience physical pain (more on that later), most of us don’t know a lot about the nature of pain. Experiencing physical pain is hardwired into our evolutionary biology, but not all types of pain are the same. Since almost all physical therapy treatment deals with pain, let’s take a moment to demystify the nature of the beast. Why We Feel Pain “At the most basic level,” states the Mayo Clinic, “pain begins when particular nerve

CRANBERRY GINGERBREAD An Extra-Sweet Take On a Christmas Classic

Inspired by Food & Wine Magazine

Gingerbread is a holiday classic of the very first order, but it’s often a construction material rather than a treat. This recipe, on the contrary, is

purely for eating. INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup canola oil, plus more for greasing • 3/4 cup unsulphured molasses • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated

• 1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries, coarsely chopped • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp ground cloves • 1/2 tsp kosher salt

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. Grease a loaf pan with canola oil.

3. In a large mixing bowl, mix together 1/2 cup canola oil, molasses, brown sugar, eggs, ginger, and cranberries. In a separate bowl, sift and combine flour with baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until blended.

4. Scrape batter into loaf pan and bake for 50 minutes. 5. Transfer to a rack, let cool for 20 minutes, slice, and serve.
