Abraham Lincoln’s Teenage Sculptor and her Association with Iowa City Hills Bank in Iowa City (1401 S Gilbert St) Tuesday, July 17, 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Lavinia (Vinnie) Ream was born in one of the first log cabins in frontier Madison, WI. As a small child, she played with the city’s Native American children and then, while still in her early teens, moved to Washington, D.C. It was here her artistic talents as a sculptor began to be recognized and a unique situation arose—Vinnie was given the opportunity to go daily to the White House for five months to observe President Lincoln and make a bust of his famous face. She was shocked when President Lincoln was assassinated just as she finished her work. She thus became the only sculptor to create a bust of the President from life. Join Paul C. Juhl, fellow Friends Club member and a devoted stereograph collector and preservationist, as he revisits the life of Vinnie Ream through stories and photographs. The presentation will further explain this fascinating, yet hardly recognized, woman with such a strong connection to our city and state. Paul Juhl is a native of Webster City, IA, and has served as a high school guidance counselor at several Iowa schools throughout his career. Register with a Friends Club representative at 319-679-2103 or Dawn_Lyons@HillsBank.com.
