As Co-Directors of Sojourner Center, we are honored to share with you this year’s Annual Report—a reflection of our community’s shared commitment to transforming lives and advancing justice for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. It is with deep gratitude and pride that we present the progress, resilience, and impact made possible by your unwavering support throughout 2024. At Sojourner Center, we believe that healing begins with safety—and safety must be paired with dignity, empowerment, and opportunity. This year brought transformative change—both in the lives of individual survivors and in the broader systems that shape their paths to safety. In 2024, we took bold steps to enhance the spaces where healing happens. Through generous contributions and strong community partnerships, we completed essential capital improvements across our campus—creating more functional, trauma-informed, and welcoming environments for survivors, their children, and their pets. From upgraded living spaces to revitalized communal areas, these changes reflect our deepening commitment to providing not only shelter, but true sanctuary. Beyond the walls of our shelter, Sojourner Center has continued to lead and engage in vital macro-level systems advocacy —working to improve the systems that too often stand in the way of safety and stability. We are proud to be part of collaborative workgroups that address structural barriers, improve access to housing, and reform statewide processes impacting survivors. At every level, we are guided by the firsthand experiences of survivors, ensuring their voices are not only heard—but drive the direction of the systems meant to serve them. Valley Partnership’s Community Project
In November, Sojourner Center’s campus came alive with the energy of more than 300 volunteers from across the Valley. In one extraordinary day of service, families, friends, and skilled tradespeople united to transform our Emergency Shelter into a more beautiful, welcoming environment for survivors. This inspiring effort was part of Valley Partnership’s 2024 Community Project—the largest volunteer gathering in Sojourner Center’s history. From refreshed outdoor spaces to new landscaping and critical facility improvements, the impact was immediate. We were honored to welcome Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington, who joined us to recognize Valley Partnership’s contribution and show their support for Sojourner Center’s mission.
We are grateful to Valley Partnership for selecting Sojourner Center as the 2024 beneficiary. Community Catalysts
The Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation As a supporter of Sojourner Center for over 15 years, The Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation continues to be a vital force in our mission to serve and uplift survivors. Their remarkable support in 2024 provided more than 1,000 safe bed nights at our Emergency Shelter—offering immediate safety and stability to those escaping violence. Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust awarded Sojourner Center $150,000 to strengthen Sojourner Center’s Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing Programs. For nearly two decades, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust has played a crucial role in providing safe housing and comprehensive support services to families in crisis.
Bank of America An established partner of Sojourner Center for many years, Bank of America deepened its commitment by volunteering monthly, serving a total of 80 hours this year. Whether they are cleaning our pet shelter, prepping apartments for new families, or organizing items in the Donation Resource Center, Bank of America employees are always ready to lend a helping hand.
In September, Sojourner Center hosted the Better Together Breakfast at the Arizona Biltmore. This event was more than just a fundraiser; it was a celebration of community, resilience, and the collective power we hold to create meaningful change. Guests enjoyed an inspiring morning program that featured powerful stories from survivors, moving messages from our leadership team, and recognition of some of our outstanding community partners. Together, we explored the vital importance of providing comprehensive and compassionate services for those impacted by domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking. We were thrilled to welcome nearly 200 community members and leaders who generously contributed to our mission. Thanks to their support, we raised over $91,000, ensuring that survivors of violence receive the critical resources they need to transform their lives. The Better Together Breakfast highlighted what makes Sojourner Center's work so impactful: we truly are better together. We are deeply grateful to all who attended, donated, and continue to stand with us in building pathways to possibility for survivors and their families. In Her Words
One of the most moving moments of the morning came from Imelda, a brave survivor who shared her journey of healing with the audience. Reflecting on her first night at Sojourner Center, she said, "I was scared... I was lost... and then I walked through Sojourner Center’s doors. I will never forget Sojourner Center. Their staff were like a safety net for me. When I had to lean back, I knew they would be there to catch me." Her powerful words reminded us all why Sojourner Center's work matters so deeply — and how every act of support creates a pathway to a new beginning.

A Space to Heal
This year, we continued a transformative journey to renovate our Emergency Shelter rooms. These spaces serve as the first safe haven for many survivors and their families escaping violence. Thanks to the generosity of the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), four rooms were fully renovated featuring new flooring, modern furniture, complete bathroom remodels, and extra sinks and counter space to better support families during their stay. Sojourner Center believes that healing begins with environment. That’s why each renovation is guided by the principles of Trauma-Informed Care, with attention to design elements
that reduce stress, restore dignity, and promote a sense of calm. Thoughtful touches like soft lighting, warm tones, and functional storage are incorporated with the hope of helping survivors feel not only safe, but at home.
A Legacy of Love and Advocacy
Natalie Woodman’s first visit to Sojourner Center was simple but unforgettable—she arrived with bags of lemons and sugar to make lemonade for women and children seeking refuge. That small gesture symbolized something greater: a lifelong dedication to uplifting survivors of abuse. Natalie’s journey began in Long Island, eventually leading her to become a professor and Associate Dean at ASU’s School of Social Work, where she served for 27 years. A passionate advocate for education, justice, and community service, she gave generously of her time and heart—serving on boards, volunteering, and mentoring countless others. Before her passing in 2024, Natalie made one final, powerful gesture: a planned gift to Sojourner Center. Her dear friend Javier Puig, who promised to honor her wishes, said, “Natalie lived to give back. If she were here today, she’d want every survivor to know she’s still holding their hand.” According to Bailey DeRoest, Co-Executive Director of Sojourner Center, Natalie’s legacy is a meaningful example of how lasting impact is made through compassionate action. “Natalie’s story is one of deep meaning and purpose,” said DeRoest. “I hope it inspires others to consider how they too can make a lasting impact on the lives of survivors.” To learn more about planned giving and joining Sojourner Center’s Legacy Society, contact

Join the Journey, Become a Sojourner Steward
This year, we formally established a monthly giving program and are excited to unveil its new name: Sojourner Stewards. Sojourner Stewards are a loyal community of recurring donors who play a vital role in sustaining our mission. Together, these recurring donors contributed more than $10,000 this past year. These monthly contributors provide reliable, steady support allowing Sojourner Center to plan ahead and respond quickly when urgent needs arise.
Our Sojourner Stewards embody the heart of what it means to care deeply—not just once, but continually. Building Momentum, Building Impact
In Fiscal Year 2023, we launched a revitalized vision for the Sojourner Truth Society — a distinguished group of supporters who give $1,000 or more annually to advance our mission. This past year, we’ve seen exciting growth in both membership and engagement. Eighty-four members contributed $177,000 collectively to ensure survivors, their children, and their pets receive the services they need. In April, we hosted a Sojourner Truth Society Soirée at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. Since April is Child Abuse Prevention month and more than 60% of Sojourner Center’s shelter population is children, the Museum was a fitting backdrop for this event. We brought together our Advisory Committee members and some of our most dedicated donors to reflect on our collective impact and discuss plans for the future. It was a special evening of connection, gratitude, and community-building.
