BICSI has plenty to celebrate in 2023. The last year has seen many advancements in the ICT industry, and BICSI has continued to support that progress in a multitude of ways. Here are a few key highlights from 2022:

BICSI EVOLVES WITH SEVERAL CHANGES

ogies, and practices in structured cabling installation. The program includes new progressive courses, certification exams, and BICSI's Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual, 8th Edition (ITSIMM) which was released in early 2022. The installation program continues to provide students an opportunity to increase their structured cabling skills from entry-level installer to highly skilled technician.

The ITSIMM wasn’t the only BICSI educational offering that captured the STC’s coveted Award of Merit. BICSI's forward-looking and engaging Cabling Installation Training Program, version 8 was also honored, marking the first time a BICSI training curriculum has received the distinction. The version 8 installation training program was recognized for having a well-structured and appealing design while also including clear objectives and well-positioned learning activities that enable targeted outcomes.

Program starting with the current BICSI South Pacific and BICSI Japan Affiliates. The modernized program will enable these affiliates to better support BICSI members from a local community perspective.

More than Words from Women in BICSI “Be the Young and the Restless” By Caitlin Brudnicki, RTPM, Senior Project Manager with BCL Enterprise and Vice Chair of the BICSI Emerging Professionals Workgroup

industry, and fortunately, we have a foundation in place for young professionals through BICSI. But we need to expand these opportunities to the next generation as well! My plea to the members of our industry is to be the person who offers mentoring or an internship to an eager young learner, or to initiate talks with local high schools or vocational schools through career event opportunities. Unless we educate our youth, they will not realize that the ICT industry is a potential career path, or it will take them years to find out. We do not have that kind of time, as more ICT professionals retire and fewer enter the workforce. As young professionals, we need to be engaging the next generation today. Let’s be the young and the restless. Educate the youth and spread awareness.

There are two things that stand out to me about the ICT industry: women and minorities are hard to find, and the industry is aging out. Whether we are manufacturer’s representatives, technicians, or designers, we are all working in a monochromatic industry. As young professionals, we are constantly working to prove our knowledge and worth. We often need to put in significant effort to prove our legitimacy as a source of information because we know we do not have the tribal knowledge of most others in the industry. Rather than degrees, ICT relies on certifications like the RCDD or RTPM, and I feel like this is a big reason why our industry does not garner the same level of recog- nition as other trades. Most often, we find a career because we know someone who is part of the industry, have a connection to the industry, or somehow stumbled upon the industry by happenstance. As young profes- sionals, how do we introduce and educate the next generation? The industry is in a holding pattern because of a lack of educational programs available to high school students and vocational schools.

W.S. Halstead of Johns Hopkins Hospital started the “see one, do one, teach one” method. In my experience, this is the best way to learn in this industry. By being immersed in the day-to-day activities of the industry, we gain a unique understanding and familiar- ity with the equipment, designs, and materials. To better prepare the next generation, we need to provide these opportunities to them as soon as possible. Internships and mentoring programs are a start, and BICSI even has a mentorship program for young professionals! I can remember sitting and simply watching as my mom went through project designs, product submittals, and RFIs. Then we progressed to site visits for above ceiling punch lists, walk throughs, and final punch lists. All of this was an organic process that led me to the knowledge base I have today. If we do not start to take the education of the next generation seriously, we will have missed the oppor- tunity to create a strong workforce to support our up-and-coming professionals. Mentorship and education are the foundational basis of any strong

Message From Your U.S. Western Regional Director

As of this month, I will be starting my third year representing you at BICSI and I truly enjoy talking to our members, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you would like to discuss anything related to BICSI and ICT. The industry is rapidly changing, and we all need to evolve with it. Please reach out and let me know your thoughts.

Hello again fellow ICT stakeholders. I hope all of you had a good holiday season and your 2023 is off to a great start. Once again, we had the BICSI Winter Conference in Tampa FL, from 5-9 February. It covered many exciting topics in the ICT industry and I hope you all made it out.

Sincerely, Luke Clawson, RCDD, GROL, MBA U.S. Western Regional Director Director - Telecommunications, G&G Systems

It was a great week of networking with so many talented ICT individuals who contribute to the success of this industry for us all. One of the great things about the conference is that there is something for everyone in ICT. Some of my personal favorite topics were: • Pushing Past 100M: the Need for Beyond Standards Testing, Verification, and Validation • How Do we Eliminate the Dividing Line of Power? A discussion about line voltage and low-voltage workforce convergence • What are Converged Wireless Networks and Why are They Gaining Momentum. • Cellular 5G/6G vs Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 These topics caught my attention because my current employer, G&G Systems, specializes in DAS and Wi-Fi. We understand the daily changes in these areas and know how important testing, verification, and validation are to a properly installed system. I appreciate how BICSI continues to pull together industry experts from all corners of the ICT world to create a relevant conference for so many of us who focus on different disciplines. Exciting things continue to evolve with BICSI, and I can finally announce we will be having an in-person regional event in Everett, WA on Friday, 28 April. The sponsor will be Fluke Networks, and I am excited to see their new products.

BICSI REGION LETTERS

Message From Your Global Regional Director Message From Your EMEA Regional Director

In these uncertain times due to financial ups and downs, inflation, wars, and material shortage, BICSI is staying strong and celebrating the 50 years since the first conference.

Greetings fellow BICSI members. I hope this message finds you and yours healthy.

Welcome to the first BICSI Brief of 2023. I hope you enjoy reading it. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, Ninad Desai, RCDD, NTS, OSP, TECH, CT for his contributions to BICSI and to our

This is the time where your credentials count. Look around you and notice how RCDDs seem to maintain

or find jobs better than non-credential holders. This is just another example of the strength of BICSI: always there to educate, always there to support our careers. As promised in the last letter, the events are coming back to EMEA. While writing this letter, the advertisement of the EMEA BICSI-endorsed event in Dubai has just started, and we’re finalizing details on the Mainland Europe Italy conference in Milan. So, by the time this is published I hope you’ll have registeredfor at least one of those. It’s been tough keeping BICSI EMEA alive without events for two years, and we thank our EMEA members for staying with us. Now we’re looking forward to a far brighter future for our region. On the technology side, things are getting interesting with 5G, edge data centers, and single pair Ethernet creating new business opportunities. You can count on BICSI to provide the latest news and events to help you understand these new markets.

industry as a whole. It has been great working with Ninad during our Board meetings. It is my privilege to follow in his footsteps as the next Global Regional Director. If there's anything I can do to help you with BICSI or anything related to our industry, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. I will do my best to help you. One more BICSI Winter Conference has now come to a conclusion. I hope you had the opportunity to join us in Tampa and that you attended the many sessions available. If you didn't make it to Tampa, ICT Direct Winter 2023 is available as of 22 February and runs until 22 March. ICT Direct Winter 2023 is a great way to fulfill the conference requirement if you have a BICSI credential. I hope over the course of my term as Global Regional Director our paths will cross either in person or virtually. Whether you are travelling, staying close to home, or spending time with family and friends, stay safe and stay well.

On behalf of BICSI Staff, the many volunteers, as well as the Board of Directors, I’d like to thank you for supporting BICSI.

Regards, Gautier Humbert, RCDD

Our industry, from installation techniques and best practices to the availability of new technologies lever- aged through-out the ICT industry, continues to expand and consume traditional, independent building technologies into network enabled, integrated building solutions.

Looking back, not many of us grew up focused upon the ICT career path. Rather, we found ourselves needed and years later, leading projects or design teams to ensure customer needs and operational technologies converged. Through our BICSI membership and certifications we have developed, defined, and implemented installation and design best practices utilized throughout the world. Celebrating 50 years this Winter conference (in-person and online), we are Leading the Future for the Connected World. I encourage everyone to consider what you can personally do to educate, encourage, and participate in communicating the opportunities within our industry to colleges, career centers, those separating from the military, or considering career changes. Through this leadership, we can change lives and ensure development of ICT- focused professionals to meet the challenges of the future. On 23 February 2023 a Virtual ICT (vICT) Forum providing CECs is available, with presentations by EXFO and Leviton. Please visit the BICSI website to complete your registration or pursue further information.
