Hype : Informed by TPT’s 1992-2002 Don’t Believe the Hype youth media program, Hype is a youth- centered initiative that uses media-making as a pathway to civic engagement, leadership development, post-secondary education, and employment. Hype creates a space where historically underrepresented youth feel empowered to discuss issues impacting them and their communities. This year’s crew examined school violence, mental health, and representation in the arts in their capstone projects. • 90% of students came away with “a lot” or “some” knowledge of how to tell effective stories using media. • 90% learned about key issues and resources in their community and feel they are a positive role model for their peers because of Hype .
