NOVEMBER 2025 Life Style PARK PLACE OF ST. JOHN

Life at Park Place of St. John

The Thanksgiving holiday has been evolving for years. From the famous feast of the Plymouth Colony settlers and Wampanoag Native Americans, to George Washington’s National Day of Thanks on the last Thursday of November, commemorating the end of the Revolutionary War and the ratification of the Constitution. From President Thomas Jefferson’s refusal to declare days of thanksgiving to President Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation on the final Thursday in November. College football championships have been played every Thanksgiving since the 1890s, and the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1924. You can thank C. A. Swanson & Sons for overestimating demand for Thanksgiving turkey in 1953—an error that led to the first TV tray dinners! No matter how Thanksgiving is celebrated today, the essence remains: reflecting on our lives, the gifts God has given, and thanking Him. Happy November to all our Park Place of St. John families. May even the smallest blessing come to mind, bringing celebration of Thanksgiving and the goodness of our God! Genuinely, Melissa Augustson, Life Enrichment Director A Message from Melissa

Give thanks with a grateful heart, Give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son. And now let the weak say, “I am strong,” Let the poor say, “I am rich,” Because of what the Lord has done for us.

In war-torn London in 1939, fourteen-year-old Hazel and five-year- old Flora are evacuated to the countryside to escape the Second World War. Living with the kind

Bridie Aberdeen and her son Harry in a cottage along the Thames, Hazel invents a fairy tale—a secret world called Whisperwood—to comfort her sister. But when Flora vanishes near the river, Hazel’s world collapses. Haunted by guilt, she carries the loss into adulthood. Twenty years later, Hazel seems settled in London, preparing to leave her rare- bookshop job for Sotheby’s. Then a mysterious package arrives: an illustrated book titled Whisperwood and the River of Stars—the very story she once created for Flora. Could this be the key to her sister’s disappearance? Driven by hope, Hazel begins a desperate search, unearthing buried secrets and reopening old wounds as her carefully built life starts to unravel.

Chaplain’s Corner Insignificant 8.2 billion. We throw around “billions” so much these days that the

much will those great-grandchildren miss us when we’re gone? After some years, we will mostly be a picture they have amassed among hundreds of others. Even those whose names are well-known now will eventually fade into the ever-distant past. In time, they too will become largely insignificant. I recently heard a great song about the repentant criminal on the cross next to Jesus. The one who, during the several hours of unspeakable dying, realized that Jesus was not only an innocent man, but the promised Jewish Messiah. Crucifixion was not only perhaps the most horrifically painful way of dying, but it was also the most humiliating and shameful. Hanging for hours naked before a few gawking onlookers, family members were rarely present. They were too embarrassed. This would undoubtedly be true of both the criminals on each side of Jesus. Each of them died alone. We don’t even know their names. They were insignificant. Well, not both. The criminal who recognized Jesus as the Messianic King made a crucial decision. He would pledge his soul to Jesus in an act of consecrated faith. He professed to Jesus, saying, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom” (Luke 23:42). He received a startling reply. Jesus responded with, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).

number itself has lost its overwhelmingness. One-billion-one-dollar bills stacked on top of

each other would reach 68 miles high! If you had a billion dollars to spend over 50 years, you would have to spend $55,000 every day. Imagine getting up every single day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, and having to go out and spend $55,000 …for 50 years! Might be fun initially, but it would soon get exhausting. Yep, I hear you. You would love to have the opportunity anyway. But one billion is a lot. The 8.2 billion is the approximate population of the world. And you are one of the 8.2 billion. Just one. Only one. And the chances are you are not a familiar one. Not a movie, television, or music celebrity. Not an athletic celebrity. Not a super wealthy, famous person. Not a followed author. Not a published intellectual. Not a politician whose name is in the news. Not a historical character. Now you may be loved. Very loved. And you may have a large family. Maybe you have a decent group of friends on a social media site. But if you are a senior, like me, that group of friends is getting a lot smaller. And how

In that moment of personal commitment, the criminal went from insignificant to significant, from unimportant to important, from unknown to well-known, from little loved to immensely loved. In fact, every genuine lover and follower of Jesus is significant beyond their understanding. More than important. More than known. More than…well, more than all the famous people of earth who have made the choice of not loving and following Jesus. The criminal made a choice, an eternal one. In choosing to follow and commit himself to Jesus, Jesus, in a shockingly gracious gesture, granted the criminal an everlasting relationship in glory. The man’s name is really not what’s important. What made him significant was his choice to commit himself to Jesus by faith. What about you? You may be only one of over 8 billion, a seemingly insignificant number. But in committing yourself completely to Jesus as your Lord and Savior, the number one takes on a whole different perspective. It takes on a heavenly perspective, since Jesus died for each person individually. Although millions have come to Jesus, they did so one at a time. Jesus’ willingness to save a criminal at the last moment means heaven is still open to you. Give your life wholeheartedly to Jesus, and make the choice of eternal significance.

From Forgotten to Found

The story of the thief on the cross is one of the most astonishing portraits of grace in all of Scripture. A man whose life had unraveled—a criminal, condemned and dying—found eternal life in the very last hours of his earthly existence. With nothing left to offer but honesty and faith, he looked toward Jesus and said, “Remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” That simple plea changed everything. He had no opportunity to make things right, no chance to earn forgiveness or prove his worth. Yet Jesus’ response was immediate and deeply personal: “Today you will be with Me in paradise.” His story reminds us that God’s mercy does not follow our timetables or depend on our achievements. Grace is not delayed by our failures or limited by our past. We often believe significance belongs to the famous or the successful, but heaven measures worth differently. God values humility, repentance, and trust. No matter who you are or what you’ve done, it’s never too late to turn toward the Savior. The world may forget your name, but when you call out to Jesus, He will never forget you. In His eyes, the forgotten are found—and the lost become beloved.
