Life Style MAY 2026 PARK PLACE OF ST. JOHN
Life at Park Place of St. John
As we begin a new month, we’re grateful for the opportunity to serve our residents and continue building the connections that make our community so special. We’ll be hosting a Town Hall meeting in the Bistro on Thursday, May 21 at 11:00 a.m. During this time, we’ll share updates, answer any questions, and go over how residents can take advantage of our Resident Referral Program to save on rent. We hope you’ll join us for this informative gathering. We’re also excited to share that the Memorial Wall is coming along and getting closer to completion. Thank you for your patience— we look forward to unveiling the finished space soon. As we move through the month, may we keep in mind the words of 1 Peter 4:8: “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” It’s a meaningful reminder of the compassion and sense of community we strive to share each day here at Park Place of St. John. A Message from Patrick
Morning Walks I’m hoping to get a few more people to join our morning walks on Mondays and Fridays from 8:30–9:00 a.m. We meet at the fireplace—come join us! After the walk, you’re welcome to stay for Forever Fit at 9:00 a.m. on both days. It’s a mix of seated and standing exercises designed to help keep you strong and active. If you prefer seated-only options, Sit & Be Strong classes are offered on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., and Thursday at 9:00 a.m. All exercises can be done at your own pace, and over time, you’ll start to feel yourself getting stronger. Be sure to check the Activities Calendar for updates, as classes may change. I encourage you to stay active in whatever way feels right for you—and don’t hesitate to stop by and see what a class is like. Hope to see you soon!
Thank you, Julia Minton Sr. Well-Being Instructor

Park Place Book Club The Correspondent by Virginia Evans Filled with knowledge that only comes from a life fully lived, The Correspondent is a gem of a novel about the power of finding solace in literature and connection with people we might never meet in person. It is about the hubris of youth and the wisdom of old age, and the mistakes and acts of kindness that occur during a lifetime. Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to authors to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter. Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has—she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her

being followed by a man with a gun, who fired over the man’s head, supposedly attempting to apprehend him. But the man suddenly saw my mother. He then took the risk of cutting back into our street lit side and attempted to grab my mother as she was running back into our house. The other man then made a diagonal run to cut the fugitive off. Our neighbors were watching and told us the next morning that the fugitive jumped to grab my mother but that the other man jumped at the same moment and was able to capture him. The neighbors said the fugitive only missed my mom by a couple inches. Talk about a close call! All I could imagine was that if the fugitive had been successful, my whole family would have been held hostage by what appeared as a desperate and dangerous man, and who knows how it would have ended. Later after I became a Christ-follower, I looked back and decided that God had intervened unseen and unknown to rescue our family. I know that many others have not enjoyed that intervention. But we had. Ever since I have seen countless “close calls” in our family and with many others where terrible things should have happened but didn’t. My guess is that if you did a deep dive, you too would likely find “close calls” in your life, family, and friends. The apostle Peter in Acts 12 experiences a close call, and the apostle Paul
I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night to a gunshot. I jumped out of bed and out of my bedroom to find my mother attempting to lock our front door. But she couldn’t. She
was shaking so violently her hands couldn’t turn the little lock on the doorknob. So I stepped up and locked it for her. Our front door had a half-moon shaped window you could look out of. When I looked out, I was shocked. Only about 15 feet from our door were two men. One lay on his stomach on the ground. The other was on top of him with a gun to the man’s head and yelling, “Don’t move.” We watched the drama as two unmarked, dark cars came up swiftly in front of our house. Men in dark, unmarked clothing jumped out and dragged the captured man to one car. There he was frisked down, a gun taken from him, and then thrown into the back seat of one car. Then all the men jumped in the two vehicles and sped out into the night. Yep. It looked and felt like a scene from a movie or TV show. But it was real. Once my mother calmed down, she told dad and I the story. Our dog had awakened her in the middle of the night to go out. She had taken him out front. Suddenly she saw a man running toward the other side of our street. He was

describes in detail in 2 Corinthians 1 a situation when he was sure he would die but God rescued him at the last minute. We live in a broken world and in a broken human race. That’s why there is so much turmoil, accidents, chaos, violence, abuse, and war. And we could add to that list countless other tragedies. The Bible tells us the cause: there is a spiritual war between Him and the spiritual and human agents of darkness. The Bible doesn’t promise that the Lord will always intervene to save, heal, or help us. But it does promise that God will often intervene in those who trust Him, pray, and persevere in faith. And God often uses suffering in our lives and in the world for greater and higher purposes that will be seen or understood in the future. Regardless of what we, our loved ones, our nation, or the world is facing, the Scriptures encourage us to cast aside despair and lean into hope. When we place our hope in the Lord, we can rise above even the worst circumstances. After all, the Bible reveals that at the end of human history, God is going to create a new heavens and a new earth. Revelation 21 tells us that God will make His home here in that new earth with this promise: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever” (Revelation 21:4). All sorrows (and close calls) are temporary. Hope is eternal. So, choose hope.
Have You Noticed the “Close Calls”? Take a moment to reflect on your own life. Can you think of a time when something could have gone very differently— but didn’t? Sometimes these moments are easy to overlook. Other times, they stay with us for years. They might come in the form of a near miss, an unexpected change in plans, or a moment when everything seemed to fall into place just when it needed to. However you interpret them, these experiences can be an opportunity to pause, give thanks, and appreciate the everyday moments we’re given. They can also remind us of the people, timing, and circumstances that shape our lives in ways we may not fully understand. Even taking a few quiet minutes to reflect can bring a renewed sense of gratitude— and perhaps a deeper awareness of the moments that matter most. And as you go about your day, notice the small things—the routines, the familiar faces, the simple comforts. Often, it’s in these everyday moments that we find a steady sense of peace, reminding us that even in an unpredictable world, there is still much to be thankful for.

WHAT CAN SPEECH THERAPISTS DO? A person’s ability to communicate effectively and eat safely is important to their livelihood and quality of life. Speech therapists can help people across their lifespan who may have speech, language, cognitive or swallowing difficulties. They can also help people modify their voice or communication style. Do you or someone you know: y Have difficulty saying sounds clearly or smoothly? y Have problems expressing themselves, understanding others, or have difficulty reading and/or writing? y Have difficulties with attention, memory, problem-solving abilities, organizational skills, or judgment? y Have voice difficulties, such as hoarseness, breathiness, or low volume when speaking? y Have difficulty swallowing? These may include coughing, gagging during meals, food or liquid leaking from the mouth, or food getting stuck in the mouth or throat? If you answer “yes” to any of the above questions, our speech therapist can help! Please contact your physician for a speech therapy referral.
IT’S OKAY TO ASK FOR HELP Changes in speech, memory, or swallowing can happen gradually, and it’s easy to brush them off or assume they’re just part of getting older. But paying attention to these changes—and asking questions early—can make a real difference. Small concerns today can often be addressed more easily with the right support and guidance. Whether it’s for yourself or someone you care about, speaking up is a positive step. It opens the door to resources, reassurance, and practical ways to stay confident in everyday activities. You don’t have to navigate these changes alone. Support is available, and there’s no harm in simply starting the conversation. If you have any questions about the benefits of speech therapy, please call the therapy department. Our team would be happy to answer them! Contact Erin at 219-287-2180
