Life Style APRIL 2026 PARK PLACE OF ST. JOHN
Life at Park Place of St. John
Happy Spring, everyone! It is always a pleasure to see God’s earth awakening from its winter slumber. The reappearance of the robins brings Matthew 6:26 to mind, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” As we begin the celebration of Easter, we are also reawakened to the sacrifice made for us with the death and resurrection of Jesus. Although we are not worthy, God deemed us worth dying for: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life,” (John 3:16). Just as Spring is a renewal of nature, I see it as a visual reminder of his promises while we walk this earth. Happy Easter to all of our Park Place Residents and Families. May you be renewed this Spring Season as we continue this life journey together! A Message from Melissa
Love in Christ, Melissa Augustson Life Enrichment Director

Park Place Book Club The Alice Network by Kate Quinn 1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister. 1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, code name Alice, the "queen of spies", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose. Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days
drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in, uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades and launches them both on a mission to find the truth.

Chaplain’s Corner Found?
a wealthy person. So the loss of one sheep would seem somewhat insignificant. But Jesus said the shepherd fervently loved his sheep. Given the countryside, it may have been an exhausting search. Perhaps he was losing hope as time passed. But then, he spotted that lost sheep. He rushed over the terrain to reach that sheep. Sweeping it up in his arms and like most shepherds, throwing it around his shoulders, he began his trek back to the 99. Gathering them all up and arriving back home, Jesus said he called together all his friends and neighbors and threw a party! Jesus ended His parable with a supernatural surprise. He said that when a lost person is found, the angels throw a party. The parable’s poignant point was clear. No person is unimportant. No one is forgotten. No one is beyond hope. No one is carelessly cast aside. It doesn’t matter what they look like, whether they are wealthy or poor, whether they are impeccably moral or grossly corrupt, winners or losers. There are no barriers with God. Each person is cherished whether they know it or not. We just honored Good Friday and celebrated Easter. Those holy days echo the heart of God. On Good Friday, God’s Son died on a cross, carrying the failures and brokenness of every human. In a sense, God “lost” His Son. On Easter, the Son was “found.” Jesus had told the parable of the lost sheep to people who were lost from God, some that didn’t even know they were lost, disconnected
I lost my son. He was 5 years old. My heartbreak and brokenness were overwhelming. My wife’s anger was fierce. She had left me with him, and it was my responsibility to keep
him safe. Now what? I could not fathom the future. How could I go on living? I was terrified for him. I was terrified for my wife and all my relations. How would the grandparents react? What about all the rest? Would they now reject me? Would my friends forsake me? What about God? After all, I was one of His “sheep.” And now I had lost one of His lambs. I thought of all the countless parents who had lost a child. Until now, I could not truly know what their pain was like. But now I knew the full brunt of it. We were in a mall in Detroit on a family vacation. So we called on the Mall Security forces. They scrambled everywhere. My wife and I ran all over the mall, and in all the outside parking lots. But our son was gone. The hour that had gone by seemed like days. Our hopes faded with each ticking minute. In one of His most famous parables, Jesus told a story about a shepherd who had lost a sheep. He had 100, but he left the 99 on a hillside to comb the hilly terrain for that one lost sheep. If you owned 100 sheep in Jesus’ day, you were

from a personal love relationship. But Jesus said He had come to find those who were lost and reconnect them to God’s loving heart. When someone commits their lives to Jesus as their saving Shepherd, and begins to follow Him, Jesus says the angels throw a party. Where are you? Are you disconnected from a relationship with the great Shepherd. Today you can be found. Today you can give your heart and soul to the Lord and begin to experience His abundant life. But even “found” sheep can stray. We can wander from our Shepherd by the enticements of the world. I love what the psalmist in Psalm 119:176 prays: “I have wandered away like a lost sheep; come and find me, for I have not forgotten your commands.” Today Jesus the Shepherd is searching the earthy countryside for you. He’s waiting for you to seek Him, to pray “come and find me.” If you do, heaven will throw a party, and your life can change in supernatural ways. My family waited in the center of the Detroit mall. We had wept and prayed until a hopelessness settled over us. And then as we gazed down the far end of the mall, we saw a small child walking toward us. I ran like the shepherd in Jesus’ story and swept up my son in my arms. I wept again, then laughed, and we threw a miniature party. Our son had been lost. But now he was found. What about you?
When Fear Takes Over In moments of crisis, the mind races ahead—imagining outcomes we cannot control and answers we don’t yet have. Fear speaks loudly in those spaces. It tells us we’ve failed. It tells us we are alone. It tells us there is no way forward. But fear is not the final voice. There is a quiet invitation that often follows panic—a call to pause, to breathe, to steady yourself even when everything feels uncertain. You don’t have to have all the answers in that moment. You don’t have to carry the weight of every “what if.” Sometimes, the next right step is simply to stop running and allow yourself to be held in the present. Even in the chaos, there is a presence that does not panic. A peace that does not rush. A love that does not withdraw when things go wrong. If you find yourself overwhelmed, start small: y Take a breath and name what you’re feeling y Reach for someone you trust y Whisper a simple prayer—even if it’s just, “Help me” You are not expected to navigate life’s hardest moments on your own. And even when fear feels overwhelming, it does not get the final word.
