Life at Park Place of St. John

Welcome Sandra Stimler!

I am looking forward to this season with my friends at Park Place of St John! Along with our seasonal change, we are happy to introduce our new Life Enrichment Assistant, Sandra Stimler. Sandra will be working with our Catered Living Residents as well as assisting in our Independent Living events. Sandra has been serving the Senior population for over 20 years in various areas of her career. For over 12 years, Sandra owned an Adult Day Care in Highland, Indiana. With the experience and knowledge she gained in her business, Sandra expanded her career to working with seniors in

Once again, we will embrace the change of another season this September. Fall brings on the artwork of God. The leaves on trees change from their summer green to beautiful shades of gold and red. Different varieties of flowers bloom during this time of year and will be displayed in all colors. Harvesting will begin, apples will be picked, and pumpkins will be carved. The crisp, cool mornings that beckon us to pull out our comfy sweaters and grab something hot to drink, flavored with pumpkin spice or apple anything, can be enjoyed by all. The Bible states in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens.” To this I say, “Thank you, Jesus.”

various levels of care and the associated limitations. Sandra finds participation in the daily lives of the Senior population enriching and is looking forward to her time with our Park Place of St John Residents and their families!

Chaplain’s Corner Time Machine

before September 11, 2001, and the disaster of the commercial planes crashing into the World Trade Center in New York, and prevent that from happening? Or warn the people of New Orleans that the hurricane heading their way would nearly destroy the city and thousands would die, and thus save countless lives? Or prevent many other terrible events, like the Texas floods two months ago. Alas, no time machine exists. We can’t go back and change anything from the past. But…don’t you love it when you’re watching a television show or movie and the situation is so dire, all looks hopeless, but…someone or something shows up or something occurs that saves the day?! It thus appears that when it comes to time travel, we actually have a “but.” No, I (you) can’t go back in time and change anything, but I (you) can make choices now that will change the future! You and I can’t go backward in time, but in a real sense, we can travel forward in time! After all, our lives are comprised of all the choices we made throughout our lives that have led us to this very moment. The same

Over the last 30-plus years, we have seen numerous movies about traveling back and forth through time. Many of these include a time

device or vehicle of some sort. Most of the time, it’s about traveling back in time to rectify or resolve something that went wrong in the present. So, if you did have a time machine and you could go back in time for a brief period and you could only use the time machine once, when and where would you go? Far more importantly, what would be the reason or purpose for going back? We can guess a lot of “spur-of-the-moment” desires. When we first got married, the birth of our first child, how we would approach that first career/job decision, how we would begin handling our finances, how we might have saved a loved one from a preventable loss, where we would choose to live out our lives, and the list goes on. But what if we had more time to think more deeply about that choice? Then we might choose something far more important than anyone or anything in our personal life. We might choose to go back to stave off a major disaster that would involve saving a huge number of people. What if we could go back

principle applies to the future. As John Maxwell, an author, has stated, “I can’t go back and make a new beginning, but I can begin today and make a new end.”

When you think about it, many people who are now famous did exactly that. Steve Jobs, who founded Apple, a company worth over a trillion dollars, got kicked out of the company by Apple’s board in 1985. Steve couldn’t go back and change his life, but he could go forward by making the choices that would change his future. That’s precisely what he did. He returned to Apple and led it to morph into a multi-device company and invent the first smartphone. Jeff Bezos began selling books out of his parents’ garage, which eventually evolved into Amazon, the world’s second-largest retailer. Elon Musk dreamed of making an affordable electric vehicle, and Tesla came to fruition. These men began as nobodies and are now among the most well-known and wealthiest people in the world. But they all failed at their initial attempts. But they went back and made a new future. In the Bible, Jesus gives people, especially His followers, the chance to travel forward in time. We find this in Matthew 25, where Jesus foretells the future. He says that among the throngs of earth are people to whom He will say, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” (Matt. 25:35–36, NIV).

Those who had done these things are surprised. When they helped people in the ways Jesus described, they didn’t realize they

were also serving Him. Then Jesus tells them, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matt. 25:40, NIV).

The people who blessed others in all these ways by choosing to assist them were not aware that they were traveling forward in time. By blessing others in these things, they were truly blessing Jesus, who always aligns Himself with the needy, the poor, the suffering, the sick, and those who are looked down upon by culture. So, you and I can travel in a time machine after all! We can do the things Jesus speaks of, and by doing so, change people’s futures. There are plenty of opportunities to help others here at Park Place. We just have to choose to do so, and when we do, we’re time travelers after all!

Healthy Aging Month September is Healthy Aging Month. A time to celebrate the many positive aspects of growing older: Wisdom, Self-Discovery, and Maturity. Healthy Aging Month was first introduced as the boomers turned 50 to help highlight the multi-faceted idea of pursuit of a healthy lifestyle from a holistic lens and dispel the myths surrounding aging. Overcome the negative stereotypes related to aging and embrace becoming vibrant and active while pursuing passions and the next chapter of life:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

9.

Don’t “act your age”, instead, embrace a positive image of living your best life. Don’t let the mirror be your guide.

Start walking for your health, but also to see your neighbors. Have a dog? Walk it. Don’t have a dog, volunteer at a shelter and you will make new canine friends.

Be positive in your daily actions and interactions. Maybe turn off the news?

10. 11. 12. 13. 14.

Make this the month to set up your screenings and check-ups.

Surround yourself with energetic, happy positive people. Smile often!

See old friends, but also make new ones.

Add pep to your step and walk with confidence using bold strides.

Eat beans and high fiber foods for better digestive and heart health.

Channel your inner “artist”. Start a new hobby.

Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy brain and body.

Stand up straight and improve your posture for better balance and self- esteem.

Rejuvenate your life by thinking positively about your life’s journey. Make life an adventure by acting on those new ideas and things you always wanted to do.

To dazzle your smile, make sure you maintain good oral health.

Remember: Today is the first day of the rest of your life!

Overcome loneliness through volunteerism, taking a class, or inviting a friend to lunch. Be a friend or make a new one.

Catered Living August Activities

Baking Club: Apple Crisp Thursday, September 4th 1:30 p.m. in The Study

Welcome Sandra Stimler!

Hello, I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself and share some of my background, beliefs, and goals. I began my journey in senior care as both an owner and a Certified Program Director (through the IAADSA) of an Adult Day Care. In that role, I developed activity programs for individuals in our community with various cognitive, physical, and memory challenges. I later applied these skills in Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, and Memory Care settings, serving diverse populations. I have been in this field for over 20 years because I truly love what I do. I hold those I serve in the utmost respect and feel deeply honored to care for them. My goal is to continue growing with my community by providing activity programs that meet the needs of all my residents.
