Life Style AUGUST 2026 PARK PLACE OF ST. JOHN

Life at Park Place of St. John A Message from Melissa We have enjoyed cold refreshments on the Patio with our neighbors,

August Tidbit The Gamble That Gave Us the Sandwich. On August 6, 1762,

celebrated some milestone birthdays (U.S.A. #250), and even listened to our very own Maintenance Director play the national anthem on his electric guitar for our Park Place of St John Veterans. As we begin the “dog days” of summer this August, Park Place of St John will continue to relish its offerings! Genesis 8:22 tells us, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease.” I thank God for the beauty in the complementing spectrum of our days on earth. So, enjoy the summer harvests, stay safe in the heat knowing the cold will be back in winter, and enjoy your days and nights of this beautiful time of year! Genuinely,

the sandwich got its name when John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, reportedly requested slices of roast beef tucked between two pieces of bread. According to the popular story, he was in the middle of an intense gambling game and didn't want to stop for a proper meal or risk getting his hands greasy. His convenient meal quickly caught on, with others asking for "the same as Sandwich." While people had been eating food between bread for centuries, the Earl's famous request gave the beloved lunchtime staple the name we still use today. Whether you prefer turkey, ham, roast beef, peanut butter and jelly, or grilled cheese, every sandwich has a little piece of history tucked inside!

But her quiet existence is jolted when she learns that her best friend, Hazel, only has months left to live. Hazel has always been the more adventurous one of their duo, and she seems at peace with all that she’s squeezed out of her long life. Yet Joy realizes she can’t say the same. Determined to live boldly and make the most of the time that she and Hazel have left together, Joy steps outside of her comfort zone—and into a bit of trouble. But as her foray into rule-breaking escalates into committing petty crime, Joy must consider what kind of legacy she wants to leave behind, and whether there's a way for her to embrace the liberation that "Bad Joy" offers without losing all that she holds dear.

Chaplain’s Corner Love America? Can you feel the shift in the

Last month, a young German soccer fan named Freddy came to America for the first time to attend World Cup games. He had 11,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter). He stayed for six weeks as he followed his beloved German team around the country, and he was overwhelmed. He called Taco Bell "the holy land." He took pictures of gas stations and shared them back home with expressions of amazement. Everywhere he went—Waffle House, college stadiums, sprawling shopping malls filled with stores and restaurants, impressive hotels, and breathtaking scenery— left him in awe. By the time he returned home, his account had grown to 700,000 followers from around the world, many of whom agreed with Freddy: America was beyond imagination. Freddy is not alone. Gallup polls show that America remains the world's most desired destination for migrants, with 15 percent of would-be immigrants naming it as their first choice for a new home. Among aspiring migrants in Latin America, that number climbs to 28 percent. One study found that immigrants and their children possess "levels of patriotism [for America] that are about the same as those of native-born Americans or that exceed them."

air? The “I love America” sense of patriotic pride has begun to diminish. A recent Public Religion Research Institute survey found that American pride

has fallen from 82 percent in 2013 to 51 percent today. Among 18-to-29-year-olds, belief in the American Dream has dropped from 50 percent to 36 percent in a single year. The younger generation is the least patriotic in our nation's recorded 250-year history. Wow. How did this happen? The younger generation cites issues such as slavery, injustice, violence, extreme political and social polarization, and foreign policy failures. Yes, these things have been true—both in the past and in the present. As Christians, we must tread carefully. The Bible is very clear about our citizenship. It tells us that no earthly nation is our true home. Rather, we are strangers, aliens, and sojourners. We are here on earth with a heavenly passport, and every nation in the world is ultimately flawed. Does that mean we should join the anti-American trend? No.

While our younger generation is the least patriotic in our history, millions of people of all ages would give anything for the opportunity to immigrate to America. Why? Because billions of people around the world live in nations where even the basic necessities of life are scarce, let alone its luxuries. Many nations do not allow their citizens to criticize their governments or leaders, and there is no such thing as free speech. Like the Israelites who were freed from slavery in Egypt and traveled through the wilderness while God faithfully provided for all their needs, they still complained and grumbled. In much the same way, many in our younger generations have become accustomed to blessings they scarcely recognize. They have stopped seeing our freedoms for the extraordinary gifts they truly are. Freedom, opportunity, prosperity, and the beauty of this nation have faded into the background of everyday life. Even those who live on the lower rungs of our society often enjoy a standard of living that surpasses that of many kings and queens from centuries past. This does not mean America is without problems that need correcting. It simply means we live in a nation that remains the wealthiest by far, among the freest, and one that offers greater opportunities for people to improve their lives and pursue their dreams than perhaps any nation in history. Freddy's videos—and the enormous following they attracted among younger people around the world—once again highlight what Americans have enjoyed for more than 250

A Prayer for Our Nation Heavenly Father, Thank You for the many blessings You have poured out on our nation. We are grateful for the freedoms we enjoy, the opportunities we've been given, and the privilege of worshiping You openly. Help us never to take these gifts for granted. Give our leaders wisdom, our communities compassion, and our families hearts that seek peace and understanding. Teach us to love our neighbors, serve one another with humility, and be faithful ambassadors of Christ wherever You place us. Remind us that while our citizenship is in heaven, You have called us to be a light in the places we live today. May our words reflect kindness, our actions reflect grace, and our lives point others to You. Amen. years: liberty, freedom, and a system of laws designed to give people the opportunity to pursue fulfilling lives. As Christians, we are especially blessed to worship and follow Jesus freely, without persecution or government or military interference. Love America? Yes. Pray for America and our fellow Americans? Even more.

Park Place Announcements Prayer Box

Phil’s Friends Cardmaking

Heeding God’s word in Luke 18:1, “Men ought always to pray, and not to faint” and Galatians 6:2, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, so fulfill the law of Christ”, a Prayer Box has been placed on the cabinet next to the Office Door. If you would like the support of prayer warriors Mark and Melissa, fill out a card and drop it in the box. It is not necessary to sign your name if you wish your request to be anonymous.

Phil’s Friends is an organization that sends care packages providing support and hope to cancer patients and their families across the United States. On Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m., we have projects that residents can complete such as looming/crocheting hats, coloring “Cards of Hope”, knotting blankets, and sewing “port pillows” for those who have a sewing machine. Card kits are another project that a group outside of Park Place provides for our residents to assemble. These kits are like scrapbooking. On Tuesday, August 4, we will have Sue Zarate here to demonstrate this card making process. Anyone is welcome to learn and participate in any of the projects we work on for a wonderful cause. Please join us and enjoy some fun and fellowship!

Thursday Learning Series Beginning Thursday, August 6 at
