The overall car fleet increased nearly back to 2019 levels in 2021, increasing from 31.7 million in 2020 to 31.9 million cars. Despite the overall increase in cars, the number of both petrol and diesel cars continued to decrease, by 0.04% and 3.0%, respectively. Increases were mostly seen in numbers of “other” propulsion cars.

The “other propulsion segment has continued its trend of rapid growth in 2021, increasing by 50.4% year-on-year, reaching 1.63 million vehicles. Hybrid, hybrid electric, plug in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles increased by 41.8%%, 39.2%, 52%, and 95.5% respectively, while FCEV vehicles decreased by 0.9%. The trend of decreasing gas propulsion cars was reversed in 2021, with a 2.6% year-on-year increase in numbers.
