SFX duo eager for mission trip

The SFX Parents Council will cover half of the cost. Goddard and Leclair-Stein are working on fundraising efforts to cover the remainder with plans for events like pancake breakfasts and the like. Come the start of next June, they intend to have all their travel costs covered and their bags packed and ready for their first student mission.

The phrase “mission trip” conjures up images of faraway places and, more often than not, tropical climes. NorthernOntario during black fly season is not the first place that springs to mind but that is where two SFX students are going and they’re looking forward to it. Christina Goddard and Elizabeth Leclair- Stein are eager to experience their first actual mission trip. The two seniors at St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School in Hammond are among a group of 10 students and two supervisors from the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) signed up for a one-weekmission to the Sandy Lake region in Northern Ontario, in early June next year. They both think it’s the perfect introduction for them to the wholemission trip purpose experience. «Going on this one is a good way to start,» said Goddard. «We’re staying in Canada and seeing what goes on in our own country.» «Lots of people go on missions abroad,» said Leclair-Stein. «But maybe we can also focus on what’s going on in our country.» During the 2016 Sandy Lake Mission, the two SFX students and the rest of their group will live and experience life on the Sandy Lake Reserve, visiting with the Cree elders, helping out on Treaty Days events, andmeeting with students in both the local high school and elementary school. The Sandy Lake Reserve is in an isolated region of NorthernOntario, accessible just by plane and not even with a direct flight there from an Ontario airport.Themission teamwill go by commercial airline toWinnipeg first and then fly a charter bush plane back across the Manitoba-Ontario border to Sandy Lake. They will live at one of the schools on the reserve during their stay, and be responsible for preparing their ownmeals. Whichmeans that part of their carry-on baggage will be food supplies. Goddard and Leclair-Stein are both loo- king forward to their Sandy Lake trip and the experience they’ll gain from living and working with people who have to rely on themselves most of the time for their needs. «I think it’ll make us better people,» said Goddard, «find out howwe canmake a dif- ference.» The total cost of the Sandy Lake Mission is $16,000 for the entire group, including air
