Climbing for a cause
Bill Harkey (Estuary) and John Henshaw (Vista Cay joined Team Sanibel for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation Tower Climb in New York this summer. The pair climbed 104 stories inside One World Trade Center, retracing the path taken by firefighters on September 11, 2001. This year’s 2,226-step climb carried added mean- ing as the 25th anniversary of September 11. The event carried personal significance for John. As head of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration at the time, he helped oversee efforts to protect recovery workers at Ground Zero. “The climb reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of our first re- sponders, while giving us a meaningful way to care for their families,” he said. This marked John’s third year participating in the event. Bill, who served in the United States Army for nearly 30 years, said, “For me, the climb was one of the most moving and meaningful things I’ve ever done.” Bill and John were among 15 civic
leaders, first responders, and community members on Team Sanibel. The group ranked third among this year’s fundraising teams, raising more than $69,000 for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s programs serving fallen
first responder families, Gold Star families, and injured veterans.
